Dell extended battery life desktop mode disabled?

Certain laptops do not support desktop mode, hence the battery meter shows the option grayed out. To find out if the battery meter supports desktop mode, please reply with the system model.

I have a Dell inspiron 15. Why shouldn't it work? What doesn't this laptop have that other laptops do? Is there any way I can make the driver think I have a laptop that supports it? Does it work with the Dell inspiron 15?

Yes, there is a driver which helps in checking the battery meter status. You can try uninstalling, restarting the computer and reinstalling the Quickset drivers.

To uninstall the Quickset Drivers follow the below instruction:

1) Click “Start”, type “Programs and Features” and press enter.

2) In the “Programs and Features” window, right click “Quickset64”, click “Change/Uninstall”.

3) Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstallation.

4) Restart the computer.

To reinstall the quickset drivers use the link: http://tinyurl.com/cgcakw3

Enter the service tag, select the operating system, and select quickset drivers from Application list of options.

Follow the onscreen instructions and install the quickset drivers.

Now open Dell Battery Meter and check the functionality of the Desktop mode.

Sorry, it's still grayed out. Don't know why. Where is Dell battery meter located? I'm running Windows 8 64 bit.

Oh, wait sorry. The Dell extended battery life settings are in the Dell battery meter. I know where that is. But it still doesn't have a desktop mode... I think my laptop has the hardware capability. So why can't I use this?

I suggest you to uninstall the previous version of quickset drivers from the system by following the steps to uninstall from the above post and reboot the system.

Please install the latest quickset drivers from this link: http://dell.to/13DByb2

Click the above link, click Download file and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation. Restart the system.

Check the functionality of Desktop mode in Battery meter.

Please post the results.

As there are many models in Inspiron 15 series, please provide me the system model in specific. Eg :Inspiron 15 R 5521, 15 Z or 15 R N5110…Etc.

Depending on the system specification I would be able to search if there is any other software available to enable Desktop mode in battery meter.

It's an Inspiron 3520. At least that's what it said when I entered the service tag.

Can somebody answer my question? I even updated the BIOS. It's still not working. I still need help.

Thanks for confirming the system model, I checked the battery features of Inspiron 3520 and it does not support Desktop mode feature.

Now, this is weird. My pc (INSPIRON N5050) came with the extended battery life feature. I did the upgrade to Windows 8 and it was working just as fine. Only yesterday, my pc could not boot up, so I had to reset. Now, it can't load the extended battery life anymore. Saying it is not supported on my pc.

My friend's pc (INSPIRON 3520) came with the extended battery life feature as well. Her hard disk got bad so we took it to Dell Service Center and it was replaced. After re-installing the OS and the subsequent upgrade to Windows 8, the extended battery life feature is working just as fine.

What could this possibly mean, please?

Have you tried installing the software the works with windows 8? I've been formatting computers lately and i found out that some drivers that works on win7 doesn't work on win8/8.1. i downloaded the drivers under win 8/8.1 category. My extended battery option is working fine and i'm using win8.1 x64, dell inspiron 3420.

Is her PC already in win8? or they already upgraded the system to win8 after the HDD replacement?

Wow! I've completely forgotten about this problem from of old.

What I did to overcome the problem was to look for the particular software (driver) that drives the Dell Extended Battery Life app- in this case, it is Dell Quickset. I looked for the exact one that would work, and the problem was solved.

I have a Dell 3520. The battery will not charge. I read your reply that there is no desktop mode. I ran the Dell diagnostic utility and it stated that my battery is working properly. I do not see anyway to turn off the charging feature on this model. Please advise on further action.
