Imaging these Optiplex 745's is going to be pretty simple.  Here's how:

  1. Make sure RIS is configured correctly on Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 Server.
  2. Boot an Optiplex 745 and get it configured exactly the way you want.
  3. Launch the '\\server\REMINST\ADMIN\I386\riprep.exe' from the workstation.
  4. The wizard will walk you through exactly what you need to do to copy this 745 Image to the RIS server.
  5. Once the imaging is done, allow the workstation to shutdown.
  6. On the server, locate the '\\server\REMINST\Setup\English\Images\WINDOWS\i386' directory.
  7. Download the NIC Drivers.
  8. Extract this package to a TEMP location.
  9. Inside this Extraction, locate the WinXP directory.
  10. Inside this directory, find the xxxxx.inf file, and open it in Notepad.
  11. Locate the following line:

    [Manufacturer]
    %BRCM% = Broadcom, NTx86.5.1, NTamd64
  12. Change it to:

    [Manufacturer]
    %BRCM% = Broadcom
  13. Save the file.
  14. Copy the xxx.cat, xxx.inf and xxx.sys files to the '\server\REMINST\Setup\English\Images\WINDOWS\i386' directory.
  15. Restart the Remote Installation Service on the RIS server
  16. Boot your workstation.
  17. You may need to go into the BIOS and enable PXE on the NIC.
  18. On most DELL's, press F12 during POST to access the boot menu.
  19. Choose your NIC to boot from
  20. If RIS is setup correctly, it will boot you into the OS Chooser menu.
  21. Logon to the OS Chooser.
  22. RIS will look for images that match your HAL, and display those images as something you can image the 745's with.
  23. Choose your image you created back in step 3 and 4.
  24. Sit back and relax...

If this doesn't work, make sure your BIOS is at the latest version, and try again.

# Inside this directory, find the xxxxx.inf file, and open it in Notepad. # Locate the following line: [Manufacturer] %BRCM% = Broadcom, NTx86.5.1, NTamd64 I used %BRCM% = Broadcom. NTx86.5.1, NTamd64 notice the full stop instead of the comma , did the job for us
