Desktop System Software for D4600
Hi,
I am re-installing Win XP on a 4600 desktop computer. Dell tell me that the DSS software is a vital piece of software that is required on this PC, but I can't locate it on their website.
Can any one tell me, please, from where can I get this software?
Is is absolutely necessary to install the DSS software, and what are the ramifications in not doing so?
Thank you.
Regards ...

There's no Desktop System Software listed for the 4600 here. So that probably means you don't need DSS on the 4600.
Are you sure they didn't mean the chipset driver? That's the first driver you should install after reinstalling XP. You'll find a link to the chipset at the page I linked above.
So the correct reinstallation order is:
XP, followed by:
Chipset driver
Video driver
Audio driver
Network driver
Modem driver
Other drivers

Some of the models don't have DSS. My 9-year old Dimension 4100 doesn't. http://support.dell.com is where you look.

Hi Ron,
Thank you for your reply.
I have now installed the drivers in the order mentioned, ignoring the supposed 'vital' DSS software. Everything appears to be working fine.
So, MANY thanks. Your help is much appreciated.

It may not be vital to your older desktop; it is vital for all the newer desktops. And the newer laptops have a NSS (Notebook System Software); my Latitude 110L for example.
