In Word go to Tools|Autocorrect Options|AutoFormat as you type tab and uncheck "Internet and network paths with hyperlinks." Do the same in Excel.

To turn on or off automatic formatting of hyperlinks in MS Word 2000:

On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect, and then click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.

Under Replace as you type, select or clear the Internet and network paths with hyperlinks check box.

The procedure is probably similar in other versions of Word.

I am using Word 2002 v 10.430.265 and Excel V 10.2614.2625, as provided to me by Dell when I purchased my PC. The suggested series out of Word "Tools" menu to Autocorrect/Autoformat does not appear in my menues. Thanks for the suggestion.

I am also using Word 2002 and the menu items listed appear not only there but in versions of Word as old as Word 97, which is on my Windows 98 computer.

Maybe you have Word and Excel set to show only recently used items in the menus? In each app, Right click on any toolbar, click customize, click options tab, check the box 'always show full menus', click close.

You should now see all availble items under the Tools menu, including 'Autocorrect options'; click on that as the others have said, click on the tab labeled 'autoformat as you type', uncheck the box 'internet and network paths with hyperlinks', click OK.

And three of you were right. I had to do the "show full menu thing" first. Then follow your directions. Thank you for your expert advise. What I ask for is now happening.

If you don't want to turn off automatic insertion of hyperlinks into Word/Excel so it's there when you really want a hyperlink, just press ctrl-z immediately after Word/Excel converts the text to hyperlink, and before you type anything else. Poof, hyperlink is gone but the text remains as you typed it.

If you forget and type something else, you can press ctrl-z multiple times until the hyperlink is gone, but you'll lose anything typed after that point. But, you can always just highlight the hyperlink, right click it and select Remove Hyperlink.
