Envelope Address in MS Word 2002 (professional)

I'm still having problems getting the default address font correct on envelopes. When I write a letter, I put the cursor in the address then go to tools, letters & mailing, envlopes and labels. The envelopes and labels window comes up with the address in the delivery address field. I right click it, select font (font window comes up), change the font to what I want, then press default. A pop up asks if I want to change the default font and it will affect all new documents based on the normal template. I click yes.

Whenever I use that same document for a letter or a new blank document and write a letter, and then go to print an envelope, font has reverted back to what it was originally (in theis case 12). Its happened to me a thousand times! Anyone with some thoughts?

Did that. I changed the Envelope Address style to the font I want (size 16 from 12), checked default and checked Update, then closed and opened doc again. Went to letters & Mailings, letters and envelopes and the window comes up with the Old 12 size again! I have to always change it manually.

tks

I did that too....to no avail. It changed it for that one printing but I also clicked the default button after changing it, (so that the new font would be the new default in all later documents), and when I closed, saved and opened it again, it was back to the "old" default font.

Does one have to open the Normal template as a template and change something there?

There is a style called Envelope Address in the all styles list but if I click it, MS applies that style to wherever the cursor is. Don't know how to change that style itself.

From the Style task pane, you can choose a drop down list and, if possible, modify the style.

If you right click while in the address field, you're changing the document default font. Try using the Options button so you can go to the Delivery Address button and change the font. This will update the Delivery Address style.

Where are your templates stored? You can see this in Word - Tools, Options, File Locations.

Templates are stored in C:/documents & settings/my name/application data/microsoft/template

Tks for helping out.

Looks like the only way to fix this is wiht a macro. What font, etc, do you want to use on the envelope?

I don't know if this will help but I have dealt with this problem (in Word 2000 and 2002) by using templates. For example, I have a template for business letters (for me: letter.dot). That template contains a variety of styles, including Envelope Address. I set the font and paragraph details in that style. When I compose a letter using this template and have it open, I highlight the name and address, click on Tools, Envelopes and Labels, select Envelopes and the text is entered in the desired font with all the other characteristics I wanted. Hit the print command and there it is. Note: You can also use Envelope Return if your envelopes are not printed with your return address.

I also added Envelope Address and Envelope Return to my normal template. (Open normal.dot, go to Format, Styles, change List to All Styles and insert the style you want, modify it as desired and save the document as a template) These fonts are quite different from those for my business letters. Unless I am using some other template with these styles (i.e., styles with the same name), these will be the defaults whenever I run the Envelopes feature. You can also change these values right there in the envelope feature without having to mess around with styles and templates, but I think this is not actually working for you and I have no idea why not. If what I am doing does not help then I have no clue what's wrong.

Arial 16 for the Envelope Address style. I can do this each time simply by highlighting the address in the envelope popup window and changing font size. I have to believe that Microsoft would allow setting a default. What do you suppose I'm doing wrong? Is it something that has to be set in the Normal template?

The article << here >> leads me to believe you cannot accomplish this. Should I get time, I'll write some code for you.

Allan:

It looks that way on the surface. But I think I see the problem. The 2 papers (one for Word 2000 and one for Word 2002) refer to problems with the label function of Tools, Envelopes and Labels. But khefron’s problem is with the Envelope part. I don’t think these papers address that and, in particular, the role of styles (and templates). (P.S.: I rarely use the label feature)

When I open a blank document (normal.dot), go to Tools, Labels and Envelopes, Envelopes and type in a name and address I can see that Word is displaying the text using the font I previously set for Normal in normal.dot. If I click Add to Document, the text is added to the document with a page/section break. Now if I put the cursor on the address I can see that the text was inserted—but with the style Envelope Address. (I am not sure if the same thing will happen if all the Word defaults are used) The font as I set it up in that style happens to be the same as Normal. However, if I change the font in that style in normal.dot to something else and save it, the Envelope feature thereafter inserts the address with that style as modified using the new font. I am working with Word 2000 at the moment but I do the same thing with my computer in my Philly office using Word 2002.

It might solve khefron’s problem. The key is to be sure the style is set up with the desired font (and any formatting) in the template he is using. I

(Sorry for seeming obsessed with Styles and Templates, but it’s a long story)

I have found it convenient to make a separate template for the envelope, linked through mailmerge to my address list (which I happen to keep as a Word table, inherited from previous versions of Office). By making the separate template, you can put the address in a text box and place it where you want on the envelope, also, of course with your choice of font, size, etc.

Gentlemen thank you very much,

I was away for a bit but when I came back, I followed your advice....changed the default font and size in the Normal template and then made a new letter template from it, for writing letters. It works perfectly.

Thanks again,
