error: this is not a valid win-32 application
Vista 64 Ultimate with a.o. MS Office2007 student/home.
After installing a trial version Publisher 2007 and activating, I can open and work with the program by clicking the icon on the desktop. But when I click a .pub file in a random map or save and try to open a file I get an error: not a valid win-32 application. I have tried to connect the .pub extension to the relevant files but after clicking I keep getting the same error. Also de-installed en installed Publisher again but it didn’t work….what can I do to solve this problem?
I don't have any problems with word, excel or power point. It is only publisher?

Seems to be a known issue with Publisher and other MS products.
Instead of double-clicking the .pub file, open Publisher and use File>Open to open the file.

No recommendations , no response? Apparently an unique problem?
The only solution I found is to reinstall publisher and do a clean new download and install. Because the existing file could be corrupt. Could be a solution? Will inform you on the forum if it works. Al least if I can motivate myself to continue with Publisher.
B.W. the experiences with MS service were very negative. Their service entry system doesn’t recognize the product ID( clearly available after activation), they ask money for services on a not working product (that must be illegal?) but the worst is when I found a way to communicate by email they don’t respond.
Does anyone know alternatives for MS Publisher? Is there an Open Office solution?

Apparently a trial ( or stand alone) version of Publisher cannot be combined with a student/home version of MS Office. That is the for the time being the conclusion? Right?

I was told that Publisher can be used together with office H/S so therefore I gave it another try
I am back where I started..after a new download “Publisher” and install, I am getting the same error again. I can open Publisher work with it and save the applications but as soon as I click a .pub icon I get the error: not a valid win32 application.
Does anyone has a solution or a clue where to look?

Thanks Rohe
I uninstalled the download and installed the retail version of Publisher (CD) I got from Dell in the meantime. Installation and activation ran without any problems. As you said I can open the files using the path: file, open, etc..and work with it.
But I still cannot open .pub files by clicking the icons. Stronger after the recent installation the .pub files are marked as unknown in the list installed programs..? So connecting is impossible to.. But as said..I can open the files and work with them.. no remedy? I thought that perhaps one of the Vista files is missing or corrupt. Although Word, Excell and Power Point icons are clickable..??

Guess you'll have to wait until Microsoft gets around to fixing the problem. If you google around, you'll find lots of people with the same issue with Vista.
Since file>open works, Microsoft probably doesn't consider this an 'urgent' fix. :emotion-3:

Thanks Rohe
We will wait for MS to solve the real problem. I try to work with MS Publisher despite its limitations
