Microsoft Office 2007 on Desktop and Laptop
I just recently bought a new desktop and new laptop from dell and my MS Office Small Business edition came installed on my desktop. I installed it on my laptop and works OK but will not activate because I already activated it with my desktop.
I was reading the license that came with office and I am under the understanding it can be installed on both without the purchase of additional licenses:
"AS DESCRIBED BELOW, USING THE SOFTWARE ALSO OPERATES AS YOUR CONSENT TO THE TRANSMISSION OF CERTAIN COMPUTER INFORMATION DURING ACTIVATION, VALIDATION AND FOR INTERNET-BASED SERVICES.
IF YOU COMPLY WITH THESE LICENSE TERMS, YOU HAVE THE RIGHTS BELOW FOR EACH LICENSE YOU ACQUIRE.
1. OVERVIEW. These license terms permit installation and use of one copy of the software on one device, along with other rights, all as described below.
2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS. Before you use the software under a license, you must assign that license to one device. That device is the “licensed device.” A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate device.
a. Licensed Device. You may install and use one copy of the software on the licensed device.
b. Portable Device. You may install another copy on a portable device for use by the single primary user of the licensed device.
c. Separation of Components. The components of the software are licensed as a single unit. You may not separate the components and install them on different devices."
Am I understanding this wrong? Thanks for any help!

Hi jimmylee226, OEM software is only licenced to the system that it came with, only RETAIL software can be moved from one system to another.

Read down a bit further and you'll come to the OEM section. You can only activate an OEM version on ONE machine. You can activate RETAIL versions on a "primary device" and a "portable device".

Well, that is pretty dumb.
Oh well. I'm definently not paying for another license. I'm sure it is just as expensive as the software.

Regardless of the make of computer, the MS license terms are the same - i.e. if you purchase ANY brand of computer with Office installed, the license is tied to that particular computer.
In reality, it's not worth it to purchase Office software from an OEM. The price for an Office Suite (or component) from an OEM is marginally less expensive than retail price, but as you can see, the user is subject to the "one computer" restriction. This is particularly aggravating to those who purchase the OEM Home and Student edition. The retail version of this particular version allows installation on up to three machines, while the OEM version is limited to one machine. Unfortunately, most customers are not aware of these restrictions.

Not really.
If you could install OEM versions on two different system at the same time, nobody would fork out the full price for the retail version :emotion-55:
But there are a number of different versions of Microsoft Office 2007 available of course - some of them 'relatively' cheap if you qualify - or have a friend who qualifies :emotion-55:
