Microsoft Word runs very slow

I have a Dimension 2400 with 2.2 Ghz, 768 Mb RAm.

Ever since I had the computer, MS Word has been running VERY SLOWLY.  It takes about a minute and a half to open!

I have run AdAware and Spybot and Norton... I have no spyware, adware, or viruses.

What else can be causing this?  This is the only program that does this.

I have already tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it... it still runs just as slow.

alan83,

The generic fix for Word problems is to delete normal.dot, the normal template. When you open Word again it will generate a new one. When you search for the file to delete it make sure your system is set to display hidden files and folders.

Uninstalling and reiinstalling Word does not replace normal.dot. If one exists on the computer when Word is installed, it uses the one that is there rather than creating a new one.

There is no normal.dot file on my computer, and I have it set to show hidden files and folders.

There is a normal.bin file for Microsoft Works though... is that it?

Deleting the normal.dot helped some but it is still a little slow...

It is taking less time but during the startup of Word it starts to act like it will quit responding... everything goes white and the small icon in the top left on the toolbar (above file) also goes white for about 2 seconds..

You say you have Norton. That has an option to check for virus when Office apps are opened and if enabled Word will open slowly (it would say checking for vuirus or something similar in the staus bar). Disable that (in NAV 2003 it is in options, miscellaneous, Office plug in; clear the check box. I think it's the same in later versions of NAV)

Is there a way to make a short movie of what I am doing on my computer when I open Word so that I can post it on here?

I am using Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition.

I turned off realtime protection, and Word still opened slowly.. so I turned realtime protection back on.

I open word, it goes gray for a second, then opens Document 1, looks like I can type.. click where you can type or start typing and then it starts Not Responding type action for 2-3 seconds, then comes in fully to where I can use it.

Norton corporate edition does not have the option you talked about.

I was not referring to real time protection, but about the office plug in.
