Office xp error message
I purchased my dell laptop inspiron in december 2001. I wasn't having any issues until I tried to download an office xp update sp3 and then it kept asking me for the seberet.msi file. I don't have the original disk anymore and now I can't even load office xp anymore.
Can I get a replacement disk from dell for my office xp?
Will this solve the sberet.msi error message?

My dad has office xp professional with disk and key. Why can't I use that and intstall it?227

If that copy of Office is a retail copy (not OEM) it can legally be installed on one desktop system and one portable system. If it is an OEM copy it can be legally installed on only the computer with which it was sold.

thanks for the legalize. My dad passed away and my opinion is if you bought the software as long as you aren't using it on two pc's at exactly the same time then they need to ease up. If they want to fight piracy then start in china. thanks.227

Your thinking is a little off base. You didn't "buy" the software.
What you "buy" is a license to use the software and then it is valid only within the terms of the contract.227

That is what the license says alright. It also says that the software doesn't work and that so what if MS sold you a bill of goods - they can't be held liable.
Well we all know what a load of crock that is too. If you buy a perpetual license, it is the 'same' as buying the use of the software forever. Trying to limit that use is a paper chase IMHO. The only advantage that MS has so far is the multi-millions they spend on lawyers each year to keep the little man down. I say 'use common sense'.
Bill has gone on to administrate his multi-billion charity. One of their mandates is to computerize the world. Maybe you should contact them for a "free computer as well as newly licensed software"?

If I had a dollar for every time someone I knew installed software on 2 pc's in their own home then maybe I could hire some lawyers and hold Bill Gates responsible. So if I buy a hammer from Home Depot can I only use it in my bedroom? office? neighbor?

No, you cannot get a replacement disk from Dell. Try a System Restore Point before the update.
