Outlook 2000 archive error

Hi,

I have a problem with Outlook 2000 (yeah, still using 2000)

I have a .pst folder that apparently has over 200 mb of data in it, yet when I try to import it into a folder in Outlook, the program locks up.

The first time I tried it seemed to be working fine.  There was a bar indicating that the files where being extracted for several minutes -BUT- at the end, I got an error message saying that the opperation had failed.

The next time i tried it I was not able to get past the "chose an action to perform" screen in the Import Export Wizard.

and after that - Outlook would load very slowly when i clicked on the shortcut.

I ran the Detect and Repair utility from the Office 2000 disk, which fixed Outlook so that it loads quickly again But i still can not get at my archived email.

Question; Is there any other program that will read the archived .pst files?

Thanks

Only Outlook can open .pst files.
Instead of using import/export, you could just drag and drop them - perhaps in chunks as 200mg is a fair amount.

You don't import archive or backup files, you use File, Open to open the pst file. The file will appear under the current file in the Folder View list. Then you can drag and drop any folder or file into your current pst file.

Mary,

Yes, your way works, but import works for me just as well (Outlook 2002, and previously Outlook 2000). You can also select not to import duplicates, etc.

PS Can't remember if this was part of 2000, but in Office XP/2002, there is a utility called scanpst (in C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\SCANPST.EXE that scans .pst files for errors and has option to try to repair if errors are found.

If you tried to open the .pst file using another program, your file may have become corrupt.  I have been archiving for about 2 years now.  About one year ago, I needed to pull someting back from the archives (this was before I became familiar with the achiving process).  I mistakenly went into Windows Explorer, found the .pst file and tried to open it through there.  It tried to open using a program other than Outlook.  Unfortenatly, this corupted the file and was not able to be restored.  I sent the .pst file to my tech group and they told me that there was nothing they or anyone esle can do to get the information back.

I then started over from scratch.  I have been sucefully archiving and pulling things back for little over a year now.

I hope this helps...
