I'm experiencing the same problem. I just recently loaded MS Office 2003 SP2 and ran AOL's Spyware Protection and blocked some "Malware" -related file.
Thanks for your input. Did you run AOL's spyware protection after the problem came up and did it solve the problem after you blocked that malware file?
OR, do you feel that running the spyware protection caused the problem?
Not really sure what caused it yet. I'm attempting more research, but without knowing what to look for, it's difficult. Will post again with resolution, if found.
Problem is I'm not certain Office SP or AOL were even at fault. These were just items I remember doing before the problem began. It could have been the issue existed prior to that, but I only noticed after these activities were completed.
Jackpot! I'm running McAfee Virus, Firewall, Privacy Service and Spamkiller. I'm still not sure why PC Checkup stopped working, but I found that by going into Privacy Service and placing the entry "pccheckup.dellfix.com" (without the quotes) into the section entitled "Web sites that can set cookies" that functionality for Dell's PC Checkup is restored.
That's what worked on my system, and I hope it works on everyone else's as well. It's a workaround, as the entry was not there originally, but does seem to correct the problem. If you're not running McAfee, then you may need to make these adjustments directly in Internet Explorer.
SPECIAL NOTE: I've had one other similar problem with another website (come to think of it), and that, too, was cured by allowing cookies from that site. When McAfee initially prompted for the cookie (as I have it configured), I rejected the cookie. When the site would not function properly, I removed that entry from the section entitled "Web sites that cannot set cookies" and the site began functioning properly after I again visited the site and subsequently accepted the cookie. In this case with PC Checkup, I did not have to remove the site from the "cannot set cookies" section, but DID have to manually add it to the "can set cookies" section, as McAfee was not prompting for cookie acceptance one way or the other.
Is it still not working? Got a popup to try it - so I clicked the link. Says it is downloading - has been for 3 hrs and no change - is this no longer available?
I was having the same problem and most likely upgrading to a newer version of AOL with it's PC Checkup feature probably reset some of the settings. Take a look at this link that discusses the same and how it fix came about.
I tried it and it worked. The message to download and accept an ActiveX plug-in will appear and you will have to accept it. For some reason, I was not able to get the ActiveX plug-in to want to re-install by going only to the Dell Fix PC Checkup link. You will notice that in IE Tools/Internet Options/Settings/ View Objects, there is a Dell PC Checkup Installer Control, but even if you try to update it, nothing happens. I didn't want to delete it and then see if by going to the site it would restore because who knows what would happen and I didn't feel like ultimately reloading everything all over.
Also if you go to IE Tools/Manage Add-ons, then selecting
Add-ons That Have Been Used by IE, the Dell Add-on for ActiveX is loaded and should be
Enabled. You can't remove this Add On although you can disable it. However when trying to revisit the Dell PC Checkup site, it will come back with an error asking you to Enable it again. Once you do, the same error listing the requirements which of course you meet. You can click
Update ActiveX, however, most likely it will tell you that no update is necessary.
That's when I decided to visit the site that makes this PC Fix tool in the link above. The only difference now is that it is telling me that my MS Office is not up to date and the only Office product I have installed is a Powerpoint viewer. When I go to the MS site as per the PC Check-up from Gteko and click on the link to check my system for upgrading, it tells me I don't have anything to upgrade. I can live with that, because soon I will get MS Office, so it won't be a problem to me. Now Dell's PC Checkup site tells me the same, but at least it's working again. It might seem like a silly thing, but the online checkup can fix a minor problem real quickly or at least alert you that something has changed.
Downloading anything - beware is all I can say!
So if all else fails, read through these posts and see if that cures your problem, because removing AOL and it's PC Checkup tool, didn't resolve my problem.
