Philips DVD+RW-D28 what can it do?
Hi all,
i just got this Philips DVD+RW-D28 in a prec 530 , i ordered it as it said that it did DVD+R discs, but i cant find a technote on it anywhere that confirms this, the closest i can see is that it is either a DVDRW208 (does not do DVD+R) or a DVDRW228 (which does). Can someone pls confirm if the D28 is a second generation DVDRW drive PLEASE!!!!
Regards
DR

I'm having serious issues with this drive, Philips DVD+RW-D28. Apparently no one really knows anything about DVD formats for recording (Me included)
I keep getting an unknown device error when trying to transfer video to dvd through either MGI VideoWave4 or MyDVD...
I finally found out, and will need to educate Office Max on this, that one can not record DVD-R discs in a DVD+RW drive...yup, we learn something new everyday!
Well anyway, I am hoping that THIS is my problem, or I am going to flip with Dell, as this purchase has been nothing but a headache from the start.
Is anyone else having writing problems to this drive, and if so, what did you do to correct it?

You cannot use -R media with this drive. You must use +R or +RW DVD media for DVD authoring. Simply return the -R for +R media.

Hi folks,
I'm just making sure about this, before I go out and buy dvd+r discs. Does it support dvd+r or not? I know for sure that it does support dvd+rw but there has been some ambiguity over dvd+r. Thank you and sorry for the redundancy.

Here's the URL for the specs on the Philips site, including all supported media:

Same problems.
I've had success burning a video to a Memorex DVD+RW using DVDit!, but my Sony DVD player doesn't recognize it.
I tried burning the same video to a TDK DVD-R with no success.
I tried burning the same video to a TDK DVD+R with no success.
I tried burning the same video to a Maxell DVD+R with no success.
I tried burning the same video to an Imation DVD+R with no success.
Has anybody found a DVD+R manufacturer that this "not-quite-as-advertised" unit can write to ???????
Update: I spoke to Dell Tech Support. Apparently the drive will only write video to a DVD+RW disc, which I can attest to. My problem of not being able to play the disc on my Sony player was solved by buying a later model player which specifically stated that it played +RW (which it did).
P.S.: Here's the crowning blow. I tried A PHILIPS DVD+R disc and it too was rejected.

Actually the drive can burn DVD+R media. Nero 5.5 does it. Sonic DVDit will not burn to DVD+R media. I am having a hard time finding other DVD authoring software that supports DVD+R media. Does anyone know of any programs that will let you not only burn to DVD+RW but also DVD+R. DVD+RW is not good becasue it is not compatible with a lot of DVD players.

It's been difficult getting information on how to "do DVD" with the Dell-branded Philips DVD recording drives. Here's what I think has been reported so far:
1. The D28 = the D228
2. Philips is not terribly interested in supporting the D28, feeling perhaps it is the responsibility of Dell to do so.
3. Writing a DVD+R on the computer for playback on set-top DVD players is a vital goal.
4. The D28 won't do this, out of the box, with software supplied (thus far)
5. It can be done.
I think most users (or me, at least) want a future where your DVD drive is pretty much like a CD-R/W...you put a disk in, you click a few buttons...you get a copy out. Lots of companies don't want this and they didn't want audio CDs to be easily copied either. We're both of us working with what we have.
If your system came with Roxio Cd Creator Basic, visit the Roxio site for a downloadable update that supports DVD+R. If you found another program that supplies the drivers for DVD+R, post it here. Note that DVD+R and DVD-R are competing standards with roughly equal market penetration. If you use VideoWave ver.4 or less, note that ver 5 was released under the Roxio label. If you want to copy protected discs, your only current, legal option is dvd x copy. If you want to author your own DVD, know that different programs are needed and you may have to resort to separate burning software. If you want to write to DVD-R format, you're out of luck at the moment.

Does anyone know if dell computers can support the Sony DRU-500A?
This DVD Burner supports dvd+r, dvd+rw, dvd-r, dvd-rw. It seems like the logical solution to all the bu**sh*t dell has put us through with this philips dvd+rw-d28 drive. Anyone know if the sony will work in a precision workstation 340 or any other dell desktop for that matter?

Ok people we may all be saved!
I just got off the phone with sonic's customer support. They make a wide array of DVD authoring software. Anyway as usual none of their software is compatible with the good ol' DVD+RW-D8 drive that comes standard with dell pc's. Buuut, she said that you can author the project, (include your titles-menu etc) make it however you want, then take the files and have Nero burn them to DVD+R! Problem solved...unless another one arises.
Hope this helps everyone!
