Problem with shutdown (related to Outook)
Hello,
Recently I have had a problem when shutting down my computer. I am using Windows XP. When I click the start menu and shut down I get the following message (note that all programs are closed when I do this):
"End Program - Outlook.exe
Ending program please wait. If you choose to end this program innediately you will lose any unsaved data. To end the program now please click End now."
If I let the program run its course it will stop after a few seconds and I get the message "This program is not responding".
If I click end now most of the time the same message will reappear (often several times). After clicking on End now several times my computer will eventually shut down.
Can anyone help with how I debug this problem?
Thanks

The first thing I wouild try is a "Repair" on Outlook. If there is a problem with a module within Outlook that may take care of it. If that doesn't work, Outlook will probably have to be uninstalled (restart Windows) then reinstall. If you have to do the reinstall, export your address book and any folders (e.g. inbox) to files on the hard drive so you can import them back in when you reinstall Outlook.
You don't say what version of Outlook you have, but the "Detect and Repair" is under Outlook Help on my Outlook 2000 version. (you will also need the Outlook/MS Office installation CD for the Repair operation).

Fireberd,
Thanks for the response.
I am using Outlook 2002. I do close the program before trying to shut down windows. When I try and shut down I notice the outlook shortcut on the desktop "flickers" and then I get the error message.
I have tried to run the detect and repair and it doesn't seem to do much. It asks me to insert the windows XP disk. After I do that the program runs for a bit and then nothing seems to happen. Not sure whether to interpret this as no errors are found of the function is not working?
Do you think I should attempt to download and install Outlook "2003" off Microsoft's web site (assuming I can) or am I better off uninstalling the program and trying to reinstall from the disks that came with the computer (assuming I can figure out which disk the program is on)?
Thanks for your help.

JRosenfeld,
Thanks for your note. I am running Outlook 2002. I did check your suggestion and found that the messager was turned on (I don't use windows messenger or any other such program). I have tried to shut down three times since doing that. The first time I still had the problem. The next two times I did not. I am hopeful that this solved the problem. I will update this post once I have a chance to run the computer through shutdown a few more times.
Thanks,
Mike
