Product ID, Product Key and missing CDs

Hi, we have several Dell PCs and Microsoft Office CDs.

1. we want to find out which PC uses which Microsoft Office CD. Can someone let me know how to find out?

2. What are product IDs and Product keys for? Why do I need both?

3. If we ever lose the cover that came with Microsoft Office CDs, is there any way to find product key from Dell PC?

4. If we ever lose the Microsoft Office CDs, is it possible to avoid new purchase and just reorder the copy? If then, what kind information do I need to provide to Dell?

Thanks in advance.

Using the Advanced Forum Search on the left, you can quite easily find the answer to these often asked questions.

1. we want to find out which PC uses which Microsoft Office CD. Can someone let me know how to find out?  Go to www.belarc.com and download and run the Belarc Advisor.  It will list the software on each PC and the product key for Office (NOT for Windows, the Windows key is invalid).

2. What are product IDs and Product keys for? Why do I need both?  Product keys are to activate software.  Product ID is generated by the software to identify that copy after installation.

3. If we ever lose the cover that came with Microsoft Office CDs, is there any way to find product key from Dell PC?  Well, it's quite technical.  Take a permanent marker and write the key on the cd...    You can use Belarc as mentioned above.

4. If we ever lose the Microsoft Office CDs, is it possible to avoid new purchase and just reorder the copy? If then, what kind information do I need to provide to Dell?  Nope.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your quick respond. The information was very helpful. :)

However, I have one thing that I want to make sure. Are we still not able to order replacement copy of Microsoft Office, even if we lose the CD but know the product key and have the purchase receipt? Thanks in advance.

Correct.   There is no such thing as a replacement copy.  If you lose it, you buy a brand new copy like you never owned it.
