svcxp,

Does this problem manifest itself only with Arial 10-pt? If you type some text in a new message in Outlook in Arial 10-pt then type the same in Arial Bold 10-pt do the fonts appear different?

The problem occurs with all fonts on the Inspiron 5150.  Regular fonts look bolded as compared to other laptops.  However, bolded fonts such as Arial bold do appear more bolded than Arial regular as expected.

Here's another example.  If I send an email with both regular and bold Arial 10 pt fonts from the Inspiron 5150 to an Inspiron 8200, when viewed on the Inspiron 8200 the fonts appear correctly sized.

I've read and re-read the Inspiron 5150 FAQ regarding screen resolution and font issues with hi res LCD screens but my problem seems to be a bit different.  I've also read that some users have had problems with just Internet Explorer but again my problem shows up in Internet Explorer, Outlook 2002, Word 2002, etc.  I've checked the font setting in Outlook 2002 and it is set to the default Arial 10 pt font.

I've already tried Clear Type font smoothing (see original post) but that didn't help.  It's not that the fonts appear jagged, they just physically appear bigger than expected.

You could try setting cleartype, then you can tune that from

Yes, but if you go to the link, you'll see that there is a tool that displays different intensities and you select the one you like best. Clear type tuner.Try it!

Jronsefeld:

I tried ClearType tuner but didn't have any luck.

Thanks.

Strangely, almost the opposite happens on my PC--the bold Arial 10-pt text looks pretty much like the unbolded. But the difference is obvious when I print anything. The same thing happens in Word 2000 and 2002, so I assumed it was just a pecularity of the monitor.

If I type in Microsoft Outlook, Arial 10 point font displays as bigger and wider than the same font size in Microsoft Word with Word set to 100% magnification.  Is there a similar magnification feature in Outlook only?
