Roxio Freezes Computer
I have the Inspiron 530 with Windows Home Premium 64 bit. The computer is only two months old. I have never been able to get into Riox DE 10.2. Every time I click on the desktop icon the mouse pointer freezes and so does the entire computer. Pushing Control Alt Del does nothing; the only way to get the computer to work is to turn it off and then on again. I have tried reinstalling it. Same problem. I have also tried adding the activation patch 133853. If I install a CD in the computer I can get into Roxio, but it says it needs to connect to a network. It looks like it is trying to install files, but never works.
I have Norton 360 installed. I also changed the number of processors to start the computer to two instead of one. This boots the computer considerably faster. Should I try installing it again with the Norton firewall turned off?
After reinstalling it, under System Restore, instead of being listed as one entry titled "installed" it lists about 10 entries all in small increments. In order words the time sequence is, installed 11:25 p.m., installed 11:39 p.m., installed 11:40, 11:41, 11:42 etc. At no time does the word Roxio appear. The volume is not dirty.

I finally got it fixed. It was definitely a graphics issue. I changed the resolution from 1920 x1200 to 1920 x 1080. I also changed the DPI from 154 to 145. This may be the sole issue since the default setting for large is 120 DPI. In Windows Media Player under tools, options, performance,I checked turn on direct X Video acceleration for WMV files so this was not the issue.
In Windows Media Player when turning on enhancements, full screen, frequently I got a black background with white horizontal marks. By checking fit video to player on resize and fit player to video on start, this problem was fixed.
I have the Samsung 245BW LCD. When playing games for some reason they display as a square instead of filling up the whole screen.

Have you completely uninstalled Roxio then restart the PC and then do a new install? If you just uninstall and reinstall without restarting the PC, the same problems can be there after the reinstallation.
This could also be a 64 bit OS issue. You may want to check the Roxio forum and see if there are issues with XP 64. www.roxio.com I installed Vista 64 bit on a PC and have had several software issues, that I don't have with the 32 bit version, and even one device that does not have 64 bit drivers; and although this is Vista 64 instead of XP 64 the same types of problems may be an issue.

I am making progress in certain respects. I don't think it is a 64 bit issue see this:
http://communityweb.ins.dell.com/forums/p/19213194/19336180.aspx#19336180
His problem was a registering one. When I first got my computer I clicked on the Roxio Icon and if I recall correctly I registered the product on the internet. At that point I was not able to get into the program.
My latest attempt was to remove Roxio, reboot and then reinstall. It finally worked. But before this if I recall correctly I had unchecked under widows media player, options, performance, turn on direct X video acceleration for WMV file.
The reason so many restore points were in system restore is that Roxio seems to create one for each subdivision: tools, creator data, audio, etc. When I did manage to get into Roxio, but before I could get to the main menu, it said "It is getting ready to install. The setup must update files or services that cannot be update while the system is running. If you choose to continue a reboot will be required to complete the setup. The feature you are trying to use is on a network resources that is unavailable use source C:\dell\D157D\RCP_CORE_DELL_37\ " Each time it attempted to install it was creating a restore point.
I rechecked the direct X accelerator, and have the same problem I started with. That appears to be the main problem. I have tried rebooting after it is checked off and Roxio still freezes.
It looks like the only way to fix it is to uncheck video acceleration in Windows Media, remove Roxio, reboot and then reinstall.
Another issue might be the graphics card software. I did a Google search and someone else recommended unchecking in the catalyst control center - video all settings - windows media video accelerator. I don't have that option available. There is also a patch for Dell computers on Roxio's site.

The problem does appear to be a Vista 64 bit problem per several users on ATI's site. I cannot update ATI's latest Catalyst Control Center at all. The reason I want to install the latest version is one user had success by unchecking "video acceleration" in the CCC. That option is not available to me in the version Dell had installed. I am convinced it is a graphics software issue.
