unable to create system recovery disk on partitioned drive
Windows Ultimate 64-bit
I am unable to create a system recovery disk for my studio 1558. I has has been partitioned and therefore not as it was when it left the factory and apparently this is the reason the repair disk facilty is not available to me. Could someone please advise me the best way around this? I assume I need to back up my C:\ drive to an external hard drive? or do I need to back it up to disk? I am not techie minded and any pointers (in non-techie-speak) would be most welcome.

Since the hard drive has been changed, the Dell recovery partition (F8 at power on) is apparently corrupted. The only way to reinstall is with discs.
As you mentioned, you can backup the drive to a separate hard drive. This is the way I do mine with Acronis True Image program (it is better than the Windows 7 program). Acronis is not a free program but is what I use and recommend to my clients and most of the techie's that I know use this. I make periodic (at least bi-weekly if not more often) full hard drive (all partitions) backup to a separate USB connected hard drive.
