If any of you don't feel up to the task of doing this repair yourself there is a guy posting over on Fixya that does the repair for $40 plus shipping.  A lot of people appear to have been having him do the repairs with good results.  I am one of them.

Had my unit repaired about a year ago. Repairman suggested that I not keep it plugged up when not in use. Repair cost was $180.

Look at the post that is two above this.  The guy on Fixya is still repairing these.  He does this for $40 plus shipping.  Check him out if you want it done right and for the right price.

Sounds like the same issue I have seen. Just changed a bulb in two projectors with the same symptom. I needed to rule out the bulb because my gut feeling was the orange blinking light did not seem like a lamp issue. I tried anyway since I had a new spare bulb. It is definately not the bulb. I believe it to be a system board failure. There is no sound, no fan coming on or any power other than the orange blinking lamp and power light that is ever so faint.

Thank you for providing the phone number! Honestly, my gut feeling tells me that an NEC can be purchased for slightly more and it is better to buy a product that has better customer service on projectors.

Thanks for this information!  do you happen to have a pic or a screenshot of where the capacitor location would be found?  thank you!

About the capacitor:

There's a YouTube video going by the title "dell 1800mp" that shows where the bad capacitor is.  And any capacitor you use to replace the faulty one should have a height of less than 30mm, perhaps even shorter.  I used a 3300uF 13mm diameter ~25mm height radial capacitor rated at 16V (identified as CAT# 3300R16).  I found it for 70 cents at a local electronics store in Van Nuys, California, called All Electronics Corporation.

If you leave the projector plugged in constantly it will again fail with the capacitor you are using.  The capacitor used in this application is a capacitor with a high ripple current rating.  The general purpose capacitors being sold in most electronic stores are not rated for this use.  A shorter, smaller capacitor will fail even more quickly.  I design power supplies for a living and researched the original capacitor and its ratings.  Repairing with a general purpose capacitor may serve your purpose if it is not plugged in continuously.  If plugged in continuously, you can expect to do this repair again.
