Projector, clean dust off of main board

This should probably only be done if your warranty is expired. Dissembling a Dell Projector will void any existing warranty.

Personally I had nothing to lose, the projector wouldn't work and Dell wouldn't help me so I had a $1500 pile of plastic with no good use.
If your projector is flickering, the picture is jumping up down left and right, then it shuts down and the lamp light comes on, it is not the lamp! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise! Well, at least try this first.  For some reason dust on the main board causes this, sounds ridiculous but it's true. I have a 3200MP < ADMIN NOTE:   Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>
and just did this two hours ago and the projector is as good as new.

For a 3200MP projector =

* Take the projector to a work room. This will get messy
* There are four very small Phillips screws on the bottom of the projector. Remove those
* There is one very small Phillips screw on the right hand side of the projector if you are looking at the projector from the front. Remove it
* Now flip the projector so it is right side up
* Remove the top piece of plastic. The bottom does not come off. Be careful. There is a ribbon attached to the top, so lean it against something while disassembled
* Use compressed air can and blow the dust out of the unit
* Take the lamp out and clean the glass lens
* Reassemble the projector

I appreciate the suggestions too.  Unfortunately, in my case, this wasn't the solution.  Mine had literally no dust ... been kept in its case and only has about 20 hours total on the lamp.  I get no fan, light, etc.  Dell has been unwilling to assist at all other than saying "buy a new lamp and if that isn't the problem, we'll refund your money for the lamp when you return it".  What a joke!

Dell really should replace these units.  They have an apparent flaw.

Thank you for the tip!!!!  My 3200MP was doing this and I shelled out the $$ for 2 new lamps!!  I was almost to pay to have it repaired when I came across this post.  Thank goodness I didn't get it repaired!!!  I followed your directions and my projector is working just fine!!

Thanks again!!!!

Dude.... You Rock!!!!

I also have the PJ755D and was experiencing extreme flickering and problems with the unit even turning on.  After along search I found the posting by mbrang00 and decided to go through all of his steps.  My projector is now functioning correctly again!!!!

If anyone else is going through this and had the same concern I had about voiding the warranty, don't worry you don't have to break any seals.  And as long as your careful and don't leave any tracks your warranty will remain in effect!!

Thank you again mbrang00, don't know if your posting helped anyone else but it saved me allot of time and I was able to avoid utilizing my warranty!!!!

I tried to do this in my 2300MP and it still does not work. When I try to turn it on it sounds like it's trying to start up but then after awhile the lamp light comes on and the projector will not come on at all. It doesn't have a speck of dust in the whole projector and it's still not working.

This was very helpful.  In my case (3200MP), there was dust on the lens behind the color wheel.  I had to partly dismount the color wheel, used Q-Tip (had to thin the cotton to make it in) and clean that lens.  I also vaccumed the rest of the projector for dust but I am pretty sure that the layer of dust on the lens behind the color wheel was the culprit.  No more flickering, washed out colors etc.

Thanks to all for contributing.

My 2300MP sometimes will beging to startup and then the lamp will turn off like it's overheating. It happened yesterday at the most inopportune time, while I was setting up for a conference. Of course, it came on just fine this morning at home. Lot of good that did. Had to borrow a projector from the business where we were meeting. Any new ideas about how to fix this problem? The bulb only has 170 hours on it.

I had to trade out  a good, hardly used, Dell projector for the 3200MP. Since I didn't use mine that often, it was decided that I would give mine up, and in return, I would get the 3200 that had the flickering problem after about 5 minutes of use. I tested the unit and sure enough, after about 5 minutes the picture started to flicker in every direction then shut down with the LAMP light illuminated. The previous user used it in a dusty environment and the projector was fairly dirty. I disassembled it today and completely blew it out getting out quite a lot of dust. I ran the projector for about 15 minutes and did not even get a hint of flickering. I had planned on blowing it out and go further by completely disassembling it in an effort to troubleshoot it. Good thing I found this post before I went too far. Thanks for the post.

Dude, you rock! My projector was doing exactly what you said -- driving me crazy with flickering even though the bulb supposedly has 1500 hours of life left. Anyway, long story short, I followed your advice and got the dust off the color wheel, and -- presto! -- no more problems!

I was about ready to call the bulb bad and order another one when I found your solution here online. Thank you for taking the time to post the solution once you figured it out.  It saved me money plus time and trouble, and I really appreciate that.

I bought this same projector from Goodwill for a pittance because the lamp would go out after only being on for a few minutes, according to the item description. Once I got the projector home I searched the Internet for information on this issue and discovered this post. I followed the instructions using a can of compressed air and, as described, dislodged volumes of dust. I then hooked it up to my computer and watched a movie without any problems. Thanks for the great tip!

Unfortunately I broke the ribbon cable on the 2200MP.

Is there anywhere I can order that part?

Thanks.

Hey,

You saved my projector! thanx!

So I own a Nobo WX28 dlp, and its is about 4 years old. It started flickering colors a couple of weeks ago, so I went searching and found this post. As the projector can still be bought for a reasonable about of money, but repairing it would be costly as well I thought I'd give it a try.

So, that was a bit harder then I thought, It took me about a week and some help from a friend to get the case off. After the top went off I had about 23 screws to go, to get through the ventilator in the middle. We took it out and cleaned the thing with a little cloth. Cleaned as much as we could inside and around the colour wheel and put it back together. This eventually did absolutely nothing, and as soon as we turned it on, it started doing the flickering colors again.

Kind of agitated I took it apart again and also screwed the colorwheel out, then i got my vacuum cleaner and put it on the highest possible power and dusted everything on the inside. (do not touch the print plated areas) After that i got my can of pressed air and sprayed everything, especially the color wheel and the sensor beneath it.

So, put it back together, and !!! It's working for a steady 3 hours no, without any problems!

That saved me whole lot of money, trouble and time!
If its outside the guarantee, it's worth to try!

My Dell 1210 S DLP Projector began to have light issues. It began with the color would go for a few seconds. After a few weeks, it got worse. After 1hr of watching projector. The color would go, only black and grey and a flickering look.

I searched the net. I first had projector blown out and cleaned. Nothing, problem persisited. Then I saw people were saying clean color wheel. Getting the projector open was easy. Getting color wheel out was not. So I never took it out. I just used a disposable computer screen wetwipe. I spun the color wheel around while cleaning it best as i could. It worked. Now the problem is gone!

I can't believe it. It worked! I have a 17 year olf HP 6120 digital projector. It originally cost me almost A$4000 and, at its last outing, it refused to work, even after I installed the spare bulb I was carrying. And then another new bulb failed to work. So I started looking online, found your advice, blew the dust out of the machine (I actually couldn't see any dust blown away) and turned the little b.... on and it worked!!! Many thanks.
