Can I install an SSD in an R620?

Howdy,

We want to test some of our build processes with an SSD instead of the spindle hard drives we currently have.  I have some NVMe stick hard drives from older laptops and am wondering if those are compatible with an R620.  I haven't opened it up to look because it's in use all the time so I'm trying to research before taking the server down.

If I can't use these, what are the options for adding an SSD to the server.  Can I use a SATA SSD from a laptop?  Do I need to add in a card of some sort to use any of these things?

Thanks!

No NVMe without an adapter.

SATA SSD is fine, but just know if you are putting them on a RAID controller, laptop drives may not work at all.

the manual covers most of this,  for  sure the lack of any m.2 ssd slots but one can by a PCI-e, card with m2 on it. on 1U server some PCI cards hit the raid card or like problems. not sure yours has those issues,

but you never said what he SSD is for. not really , are you going to boot from it, booting it is special case.

I have mine booting form SSD sata in place of the DVD drive (cables adapters I made) R310 and R710 and  dell server.(and 1 HP sever too)

all 3 boot to ssd, leaving in my 710 and nice 8  drives SSA 2.5"  10k RAID 6 array. (9 drives.) SSD boots. hidden in my fake (home made) DVD drive gutted chassis (DVD) and a special power Cable I made. $5 in parts.

my 8 slot back plane if I wanted could boot the SSD too, SAS can do that, SAS has (sata emulation mode)

Just about any SSD works, sata,  yes some laptop (relics) had odd ball SSD drives, but gee so very rare.

Just buy 128gb and boot it,  its no big deal. ask how. if want to.

if this is a blade server, I've no clue, out of my paygrade, for sure skill sets. (FYI)

the data sheet shows.

under drives.(configured chassis, unstated by you)  seems it has PCIe option of some kind? IDK

8 × 2.5"

or 4 × 2.5" + 2 × PCIe SSD

or 10 × 2.5"

my 410 and 710 have this. (uses a dell adapter off a dell laptop)

using the oldest SSD I have just  to prove old works,  so do all others , real SSD, show me your ssd and can answer for you or the model.#

home grown works, and many other ways, too, I've tried them all, even making custom cables.

just power cable is the issue.

This is overkill !!!

Just get  9.5mm HDD Caddy for R620 it it

If you miss cable part numer is: TY09P 0TY09P for Dell PowerEdge R620 -- you can find this in china

If you need hot swap get  ICY Dock MB411SPO-2B 2.5 - 9mm
