Cannot Update Firmware through LCC FTP
I cannot update the firmware for a Poweredge R820 through the LCC. When I choose FTP update, and use ftp.dell.com, I receive the error SUP-0539, something about missing repositories. When I try downloads.dell.com, I am given an error that claims I need a username and password. Googling this issue yields no results, and no username/password combination for the downloads.dell.com link.
When performing a network test, the machine reaches its Gateway and DNS addresses just fine, but fails to reach the ftp.dell.com domain.
I can provide any information needed.
Thanks,
Jeff

Yes, the file type matters. The LCC can only run certain file types. The Windows 32-bit Dell Update Package on this download page is what you should be using.
www.dell.com/support/home/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=1YCHC
If that update does not work then try stepping to version 2.10 first. Make sure to use the 32-bit DUP.
www.dell.com/support/home/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=Y5K20
If 2.52 will not load properly then I would update to 2.10. If the 2.10 update works then I would update the system BIOS to the latest. Once the system BIOS is at the latest I would update to 2.52. You can update the BIOS using a Windows 32-bit DUP the same way we are updating the iDRAC/LCC.
I think the reason you are having so many issues is because your BIOS and firmware are so far out of date. It doesn't appear an update has ever been performed on the system. I don't see any stepping requirements in the firmware release notes, but you may need to step some of the BIOS and iDRAC updates.
You are running 1.x iDRAC firmware, the iDRAC and LCC were two separate updates at 1.x on the iDRAC7. Starting with 2.0 they became a single combined update.
Thanks

Hello
We have made many changes to our download sites over the years. If you are using an old version of the iDRAC/LCC then it may not be able to locate the correct catalog file. I suggest updating the iDRAC/LCC by one of the other available methods and trying again.
The catalog file was moved from the root of ftp.dell.com to ftp.dell.com/catalog/, so you can try specifying that location instead of ftp.dell.com. Downloads.dell.com/catalog/ should work as well.
If it is failing to reach the site then you should troubleshoot your network. Some network security or firewall may be blocking access.

Hey Daniel,
I had to update a PowerEdge R540 last week, and it was able to connect to the FTP site without issue, although it was newer and still under warranty. I will figure out how to update the LCC, since it appears to be very much out of date.
Thanks!
I cannot reply again to this topic, my post keeps getting removed for some reason.
It appears my previous post didn't make it, so here's an update on what I've tried today.
LCC - 1.1.0.1108 (2013?)
BIOS: 1.3.7
iDRAC7: 1.30.30 (Build 43)
So things are pretty out of date.
Here's what I tried with your suggestions for FTP, and the results:
Address: downloads.dell.com
Catalog Location: catalog
Result: Asks for username and password
Address: downloads.dell.com/catalog
Result: LNK0002 Error - unable to resolve hostname
So none of the suggestions for FTP are working for me. It boggles my mind because as my last post stated, I used the ftp.dell.com site to update a PowerEdge R540 with no problems just last week. So I tried to update the LCC itself with a USB drive, and I still can't manage it!
I downloaded the iDRAC with Lifecycle Controller 2.52.52.52 firmware, and the Legacy Dell Lifecycle Controller LC2 1.4.2. The server recognizes the flash drive that I plug in, but it won't find either of those firmware items in the drive. I'm beyond lost on what I'm missing here.
I appreciate any further help.

Hey Daniel,
The forum seems to like to remove my post for breaking some sort of abuse guidelines, although I'm not sure why. I'll get more information to you as soon as I can. It's frustratingly annoying.

If the update is not recognized it is likely either not the correct file type or the file system used on the USB drive is not compatible with the LCC. FAT32 is the most universal file system for compatibility, NTFS may also work. The LCC should be able to recognize a Windows 32-bit Dell Update Package. Don't install the stand-alone LCC update. The iDRAC and LCC are a single combined update starting with version 2.0 of the iDRAC/LCC update.

Hey Daniel,
Thanks for your patience with this. I downloaded the LCC and iDRAC7 update package, and extracted the contents of the DUP to a FAT32-flash drive. The server claims a SUP0530 error, citing Incorrect Repository Path Location. The files are just hanging out in root, there shouldn't be any other path to pick. What in the world am I missing here?
Thanks,
Jeff
EDIT: I powered up another PowerEdge R820 that we have, same software versioning as the other one. Same results on ftp.dell.com, downloads.dell.com, and LLC firmware through a FAT32 USB. Reset both machines to factory config, same results.

I just tested on a system and was able to perform the update without issue. I created an ISO with just the DUP file in the root directory. I renamed the DUP to idrac.exe for simplicity. I had to specify the file name of the DUP to prevent the LCC from searching for a catalog file.

Hey Daniel,
No luck on using a CD, the machine claims it can't see one despite the drive being active. So I placed just the DUP on that same FAT32 usb drive. Renamed it idrac.exe for simplicity. Lo and behold, oh glorious joy, the machine seems to see it.
Error: SUP0527 - The Update Package does not have this system in the supported platform list.
How is this even possible? I downloaded the correct LCC update straight from the R820's driver list. Choosing an Operating System shouldn't matter, since the LCC is independent of the OS, right? Besides, the drives on the machine have been wiped clean with DBAN, so there's no OS even present on the server. This issue just gets weirder and weirder, and I really do appreciate your help.
EDIT: I have tried a download of every LCC 2.52.52.52 version for each of the available Microsoft Server options, and no luck on any of them. Do I need to download an earlier version, say from 2015, and then try to update further? It just doesn't make sense.

So, BIOS v2.2.3 was able to install, which has allowed LCC 2.20.20.20 to install, which will allow the FTP site to be accessed to finalize all updates. Thanks again for your help and patience here Daniel, you're a lifesaver. Might want to include in some of the documentation that step-updating may be required if your LCC is still at version 1.x!

Hey Daniel,
One of the R820s took the 2.20.20.20 LCC update, and was then able to connect to the FTP site to get everything else. The other R820 is not cooperating as well; the 2.10.10.10 update won't take, and that's the old version 2.x LCC for that machine. It also will not take a manual update of the most up to date BIOS. I'm trying an older 2.2.3 BIOS version, but it's even more puzzling that one machine takes it while another with the exact same configuration won't.

What an f'ing cluster F this whole setup is. R740's, can't simply update them, have wasted an hour so far trying to figure out the magic combo of settings to let the stupid LCC get updates. At this point did the network setup with the intentionally ignore the ipv6 error, cancel to get back, attempt to download, replace the default downloads server name with ftp, and now I'm back to the invalid download file error. This is so stupid.
