Creating RAID configuration Backup/Restore

Hello,

We have the following Hardware:

Dell PE 2650 with external storage PowerVault 220S. The server contains the PERC 4/D controller. Right now it is working fine.

We want to have standby system for the above server. Whenever the above server goes down we want to connect the same external storage to the standby system to continue the normal operation.

So we installed the other machine with the same OS ( United Linux 1.0 same as the existing one ). We not sure how to take the RAID configuration from the existing server so that it can be restore to the standby system. The proposed standby system also contains the PERC 4/D controller.

I need help to accomplish the above task. Please let me know I need to put some more information my side.

Thanks & Regards,
Martin Reemala

You need a Storage Area Network (SAN).

Read this and then call your Dell Account Rep.

I do not use Linux but...

Should the original machine fail, you connect the 220s to the spare; you MUST connect the cable to the same channel as the 220s was on in the original,( or data destruction is possible, though I have done it on purpose and recovered from it ), make sure the raid configuration on the spare machine is cleared of any raid arrays.
When you start the spare with the the 220s in place, it will balk and ask if you want to use the configuration on disk, which you do. The adapter will read the configuration stored on the array disks.

Raid adapters rarely  fail, so in most instances, you could pull the raid card from the original, place it in the spare, and your back in business

It is wise to document ALL the settings in the raid bios and the disk placement order, and use a util by Dell or Lsilogic to backup the raid configuration. Number you disks with a black felt pen, avoid changing disk order on a channel, and NEVER move a disk placed on one channel to another channel, again this will possibly destroy data.
