dell poweredge r240 server- no display only cursor
After I login to the server I get nothing but a black screen. I can hit ctrl+alt+del to get the task manager up or to restart, but nothing more.

Does Windows+R bring up the Run dialog box? If so, try starting explorer.exe manually (just type in 'explorer' and hit Enter) ... or you can do this with the New Task button in Task Manager.
If that doesn't work, restart in Safe Mode to see if you get a Desktop, then you can further troubleshoot the issue (msconfig). You didn't say what OS, so it's hard to give any more specific guidance.
