Digital KVM switch DS2161 & Windows 2003 server

Hi,

We are running 2003 server software and are trying to install the Dell Digital KVM Switch software on 2003 Server.

Unfortunately, the latest software will NOT install on 2003 server, whilst OLDER versions could do this without problems???

What has changed in the latest software (1.2 version) that it no longer works on 2003 server, whilst the old version (1.0b) could install flawlessly on 2003 server???

Is an update planned, and if not, what can we do to force an install???

I can't imagine a lot has changed...

Hope you guys can help!

Hello Freddy,

Yes, you are absolutely correct in point that issue out as have many of our customers.  Not to fall on deaf ears, we have been working at qualifying a new version of that software that corrects that issue as well as expands some of the on screen interfaces to be more user friendly.  However, even though we are rushing this a fast as we can, this newer version is still a few months out from release.

Sorry I could not be of more help.

Regards,

The Dell Rack Team

What worked for me is to set compatibilty mode to "Windows 2000" on the setup.exe file. You do that by selecting the file, go to properties - compatibility tab.

I use W2K3 with SP1... DEP was also giving me a hard time, so I had to disable that too.

Cheers

Yay :smileyvery-happy:

That's a good tip; Never thought of that! Thanks you very much!

What dou you mean with DEP though, and why did you have to disable it?

Thanks again for the tip!

Hi RackGuy!

Thanks for your answer!

Hope the new version has some nice new features and that it arrives soon :smileywink:

In the meanwhile someone else has posted an idea that can be a workaround to the problem...

Only snag is I want to use the software as a Citrix application and it has to be scripted first... No idea how Windows 2003 Citrix servers react to the 'fooling it to Windows 2000 mode'

DEP = Data Execution Prevention. New feature of SP1. It prevented me from installing version 1.2. After disabling it (setting it to essential Windows programs and services only) you have to restart your server.

Hi Rack_Guy,

Any news on a new version software for the DS2161 that works with Windows 2003?

Thanks!

drumpie,  Thanks for the suggestion!  I just encountered my first problem installing the software and it is on my new Windows XP x64 machine.  I received the error "The installer cannot run on your configuration.  It will now quit."  The fun part is that I simply set compatibility to "Windows XP" and it installed successfully.  Thanks again for the great info.

How to install the DELL 2161DS IP-KVM Switch on Windows 2003 Server:

Exclude from DEP:
control Panel > System > Advaned > Settings under Performance > Data Execution Prevention
Make sure "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select" is checked.
Click Add, and browse to setup.exe and double-click, Click OK, and OK again.

Set Compatibility mode:
Right-click setup.exe > Properties > Compatibility
Check "Run this program in Compatibility mode for:" select "Windows XP" click ok.

Installation will execute and the program will run after installation.
After you installed the program you should remove the setup file from DEP again.
