New User & Unable to update Bios thro Lifecycle controller
Hi All,
I recently bought a second hand Dell PowerEdge R710.
I was able to update most of the thing with iDrac except Bios
When I go to Lifecycle controller and try to update thro Platform Update —> Launch Platform Update —> FTP Server —> Just Address field is: ftp.dell.com and Proxy Settings is unchecked. When click Next, after getting these messages in the Message windows:
connecting to ftp and ...
The error is: Unable to resolve host name.
Please help me to fix this issue and update the Bios from V.3 to the current version that is 6.
Thanks in advance,
Mostafa

Skip FTP ... download the Windows Update Package of the BIOS update, and update using that through the iDRAC.

Thanks for your reply,
But I have two problem now:
1. I was able to connect to the iDrac with the IP was set on this machine before and because I wanted to reset everything, I reset even the iDrac.
Now, I change the IP and username and password for iDrac, but can not remotely connect to this IP address from my laptop.
2. As I remember, when I connected to the iDrac and updated firmware, I did not give me any option to update the Bios.
I really appreciate if you help me with iDrac setup from the scratch to be able to connect to iDrac again and also give me the steps to find the update Bios option in iDrac.
Thanks.

Hello @Mostafa.O,
You need to be very carefull when updating the BIOS from such and old version. Because if you have v.3 and want to update to the latest.. I would recommend you to go updating step by step. Not updating directly to the latest version
This is the download link for the last BIOS update. Dell Server BIOS R710 Version 6.6.0
Do you have an OS installed? If you have Windows you can run the .exe directly. Or the bin if you have Linux.
Regards.

Unfortunately I can not access to iDrac to update.
that time the only option to update was “Update Firmware” and when I loaded the Bios update file it was not able to do that.
you are right, it’s more safe to install Windows now.
But, I’m beginner in it too. Please help me.
what version of Windows can install on this server now? How and where can I get the installation file and from?

Hi,
Thanks for your advice.
unfortunately, there is not an installed OS on this server.
When I got this server, just changed the iDrac IP to 192.168.0.200 and updated the username and password and thro iDrac updated LCC and firmware. I was not able to update Bios from V.3 to the current version.
During my researches, I learned how to reset factory everything, So I reset iDrac, LCC and also one more thing by Capslock on and pressed three keys (if not mistake E+F+B). So reset three things.
Since that time can not connect to iDrac.
Tried to update iDrac IP fro 192.168.0.120 to 192.168.0.100 or 192.168.0.200 in the same home network with same LAN that was using before. Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway 192.168.0.1
As I’m new in server field, need to know, 1. what should I do to reset a second hand server and then 2. what components do I need to update and make the server ready to use and then 3. install ESXI and OSs

"when I connected to the iDrac and updated firmware, I did not give me any option to update the Bios"
It won't specifically say "update BIOS here" ... you will have the ability to browse for an update package from the update server section ... download the Windows Update Package version of the BIOS, then browse/attach THAT update package and run it.
I would install Windows at this point - temporarily, using an evaluation - to get to a more manageable point.

Just google and download "server 2019 evaluation" from Microsoft.
Create a bootable USB with the ISO.
Boot to the USB and walk through the install - all defaults are fine.
Then install OpenManage Server Administrator (Managed Node) ... this will give you visibility into the iDRAC settings. You can also run updates from Windows, either individually or by downloading and running the SUU (Server Update Utility) ISO.

I downloaded the Windows Server 2019-Evaluations iso file and created a bootable USB and when tried to boot the server with it, give a message: Remove this device and press any key to reboot the server.
What is the problem?

Is your USB bootable? How did you create it? If you browse the USB, does it show the ISO file?

I downloaded the iso file and created a bootable usb with Rufus application.
When turned on the server and selected USB and it said remove the usb and press any key to reboot the server.
