Power Control Unit Error during boot on Poweredge R820

I purchased this server on eBay and everything seems okay expect this error that appears from time to time.

Alert! System fatal error during previous boot
  Power Control Unit Error

Any ideas what this means?  I successfully installed Windows Server 2016 and there are no device issues.

Hi,

It would be good to check in the iDRAC logs to see if there is any hint what is the issue, check if it's a PSU issue, or PDU issue. You mentioned the error happens from time to time, so at times when it boots there is no error message?

Is the iDRAC/LCC and BIOS firmware up to date?

Thank you for the quick response!  I'll see about checking the iDRAC logs and the PSU.  I have a second pair of PSUs but they're only 750W versus the current ones are 1100W.  Would it be safe to switch to the lower wattage.  It's got 4 E5-4620v2 processors and 192GB of memory, 7, 146GB SATA, and 1, 800GB SATA.

The iDRAC/LCC version 2.65.65.65

Here are the versions of the other components, if that helps.

Hi,

Regarding information you provided, the iDRAC/LCC version 2.65.65.65 and BIOS version 2.7 which, according DELL catalog are the latest. The full list of available firmware updates you can find here:

Four processor configurations require two PSUs (2 x 750W or 2 x 1100W), so it is possible to switch PSU to  lower wattage.  Regarding PowerEdge R820 owner’s manual:

Your system supports either:

• Two 750 W or 1100 W AC power supply modules

• Two 750 W Titanium efficiency power supply modules

It is recommended to use DELL certified PSU.

For follow troubleshooting it is recommended, as was mentioned,  to check logs from iDRAC. Additionally you can check LCD display for specific code error.

Additionally, you can run a Hardware Diagnostics:
