Poweredge 720 additional storage expansion
Can I use the PCIe riser slots to install a SATA controller and add a couple drives, that way?
I want to have a boot drive that is not on the main storage backplane (because it is full).

Hi Morjan,
In Dell R720 Server, provisioning is not there to add additional HDD's apart from the Front Backplane, Even if you connect any additional RAID Controller Card in PCI slot, it will not be possible for you to place additional HDD's and backplane in the R720 Chassis.
In R720XD form factor that provisioning is there, to connect extra two HDD's in back side.
In the Front side backplane of a R720 server maximum provisioning is 2.5" * 16 or 3.5" * 8 HDD's.
If you had any SAN Storage in your premises, then you can configure the server for SAN Booting for your further space requirement.
Thanks

Hi Prasen,
Thanks for the response! I tried an M.2 card that didn't seem to work. It seemed convenient because the M.2 SATA drives just go onto the card and I don't need space elsewhere.
What if I used the SATA port for the optical drive and/or tape drive? Surely the optical SATA port would be bootable? Is there any reason it wouldn't recognize a SATA drive? Then I just need a power cable.
