R640 not reporting connected PERC H740P
I have an R640 not reporting the H740P mini mono I have installed. The PERC and cable work in another unit with the same configuration. The R640 in question will report when I have an H730P installed. I am stumped as to what could be happening here. System and parts are up to date.

Without looking at the documentation, it is possible that that particular version of the H740 has to go in a particular slot - either the dedicated storage slot or a particular expansion slot. What system did it come from?

The above reply does not appear very helpful for this instance.

Would you confirm the part number of the H740p controller, what chassis R640 is this (4,8, or 10 drive), and lastly where the card is currently installed?
Let us know.

This is certainly odd behavior. When you say that the H740 isn't reporting, can you clarify? Is it not showing up in the BIOS/iDRAC at all?

Correct. The devices list is not showing the H740 when installed but will show an H730 when installed. I have tried multiple working good H740s and SAS cabling to the backplane expander.

Thank you. Would you confirm if the server is up to date on the BIOS and iDrac, as well can you confirm if any of the cables were F84ND or CVPR7?
Thank you.

All firmware levels are up to date and the cable is p/n 8Y2C8 which should be correct for a 10 bay chassis.

Hi,
it could be an hardware issue on the system board. Before replacing parts I would recommend taking the system to minimum-to-POST. Remove or disconnect any unnecessary hardware like the SAS cable on the PERC and see if there is any change.
The components mentioned below are the minimum configuration to POST:
One processor (CPU) in socket processor 1
One memory module (DIMM) in socket A1
One power supply unit and PDB/PIB
System board
and of course the PERC card
Is the server still in warranty?
Let us know how it goes.
Thanks
Marco

Min Config used and the PERC SAS cable disconnected. Error reporting SAS cable is not connected.
Still under warranty. (at this point trying to figure if issue is mainboard or backplane/expander so I can dispatch the correct part)

I'd have to recommend contacting phone support at this time. From the description, I'd expect that the issue is likely the expander. We know the H740P and cable are good, since they work in another system. We know that the slot will work with another controller. This would indicate, to me, that the board is likely fine (excluding the possibility of a connector issue, which can fail). The other reason I say that it may be worth engaging support with the level of information you have at present, is that they may decide that the best call is to send multiple parts. I don't want to set the expectation that this is something that would definitely happen, though. That decision would be up to the support team and I don't want to give the impression that this is definitely what would happen.
If you happen to have another expander you can test in the server, that would be the best troubleshooting test I could suggest. Shy of that, I can't think of a good way to isolate any further.

I did try another working good backplane and expander with the same result. I was able to use another test unit with all of the parts in the problem chassis and the PERC was seen. At this point I am dispatching the mainboard as the problem child. Thanks for all of the help everyone.
