R720xd shuts down on system reboot

I'm having an irritating issue with a Dell R720xd running Windows Server 2019 Datacenter. Everytime the system is rebooted, it instead shuts down and we have to use the iDRAC to power the server back up. We've updated all drivers and Windows is updated completely, but we cannot get rid of this issue. Any ideas on what else to try?

did you log in to iDRAC AND read all logs.

does this server have 2 PSU? like min has, is it wattage correct? for config (CTO  correct)

Is it overheating

does the logs show fans bad,

do you have a  testing only boot usb stick?  of any kind be it Linux or windows PE disks or some such  boot stick to conduct testing? Im not sure but dell may have testing disk like this.....(someone pops in with facts)….

then see if the server shuts down now? if yes you can forget. Windows Server 2019 Datacenter. bad.

try to isolate failures, this way, HW or is it Software .

are all BIOS and Drac firmware updated?

What BIOS is the server running? It looks like 2.7.0 is the latest, so you might try that. Server 2019 hasn't been validated for the R720 platform at this time, so it may be something that gets packaged into a future update. Are there any error messages logged in the iDRAC?

I am running 2.7.0 for the BIOS. The server is also booting via UEFI. The iDRAC reports that "An OS graceful shut-down occurred" so I'm thinking it's a Windows Server issue. I did have Ubuntu on this at one point and I don't remember having issues with it rebooting. Tomorrow I should be able to schedule some downtime to try booting to the Support Live Disk and see if it reboots okay.

I just experienced the same issue.  It only happened in UEFI mode and not in BIOS mode for me and only with Server 2019.  Server 2016 works fine.  I ensured all devices were running the latest firmware and I couldn't get the issue to go away.

I'll deploy 2019 on a 12G system in the next few days to see if I can replicate the issue or not. I'm assuming it will replicate, but if not, maybe I can share some helpful information.

Hi all,

Any update regarding this issue ? We are experiencing the same type of behaviour with our PE FM120. System shutsdown instead of rebooting with WinSrv 2019 and UEFI enabled.

Thanks

Any luck? I'm having this same issue Windows 2019 Dell PowerEdge R320. Whenever I do a restart from the OS, the system shuts down. iDRAC logs state graceful shutdown from OS.

I have not resolved this issue yet. I did find that Windows logs an event 109 and states "The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition. Shutdown Reason: Kernel API". The details give a ShutdownActionType 5, ShutdownEventCode 0, and ShutdownReason 5 which as best as I can determine means "Other Failure: System Unresponsive". Really wish I had a solution to this as it limits my ability to schedule a reboot at night when the server is not being accessed (as I have to manually restart it).

This needs to be fixed.

I'm having this same issue Windows 2019 Dell PowerEdge R720. Whenever I do a restart from the OS, the system shuts down. This only happens UEFI only. If I use BIOS to boot there is no problem. iDRAC logs state graceful shutdown from OS.

I have found that if I reboot the server (warm boot) using the iDRAC 7 Enterprise Virtual Console menu I have no problem. If I reboot using server 2019 the system shuts down. Therefor it must be a problem with how the server interprets the restart command from server 2019. During the "reboot/shutdown" windows shows "rebooting".

Confirmed problem.

We are also experiencing an issue with Server 2019  on the Dell PowerEdge R720xd.

We were able to load the OS from USB media without the Lifecycle Controller. Configured with UEFI.

Upon 'Reboot' the server shuts down.

Lifecycle controller doesn't have the correct OS Driver pack. When we attempt to deploy through that option, we hit a BSOD with a driver error.

We contacted Dell Support, and due to the server's age and being out of warranty, they were only able to direct us here.

We will be working on the server again this afternoon to see if we can find resolution, but I believe this may be a Microsoft OS driver issue with UEFI.

Confirmed loading OS with MBR BIOS vs UEFI works properly now.

We did not use the Lifecycle Controller.

We are able to reboot successfully with the Windows Server 2019 Standard OS installation MBR BIOS.

For our needs, this is good enough. It would be nice to deploy with the Lifecycle controller and UEFI, but it appears that is a pipe dream at the moment.

Has there been any progress in regards to the server shutting down instead of rebooting using Server 2019 and UEFI?

Hello,

the problem is present also with BIOS Mode?

Thanks

I had this same issue on an R520 on a fresh install of Server 2019 in UEFI mode. At the time I was not current on BIOS nor Lifecycle Controller. As part of the troubleshooting I upgraded the BIOS to 2.9 and also upgraded Lifecycle Controller to the latest version. Also did all Windows Updates. I tried changing the boot mode to BIOS from UEFI but was unsuccessful (not surprised).

Since this was a fresh install I simply re-created my flash drive to boot using MBR and changed to BIOS mode for my boot setting and reinstalled Server 2019 from scratch, in BIOS mode.

This is now working - I can successfully restart the server without it shutting down.
