Rack mounted PC

Hi,

I'm new to the rack mounted world and was wonderin gif someone could please help me out. I need to buy a rack mounted server that I want to build with Windows Vista so it affectively runs as a PC. I need a large hard drive for storing video footage and it needs to have DVI as well if that's an option.

If someone could help that would be great. The server will affectively be recording images from IP Cameras so the relevant software needs to be installed.

Does anyone see any issue with turning a server into a PC and if not could someone please recommend which model I should buy from Dell. The machine doesn't need to be that fast, just fast enough to capture footage from about 5 security cameras (quite a low frame rate).

Thanks for your time.

Kind regards

Mark.

The PE860 is the entry level server and with a RAID0 it has 1.5TB of storage. It list on Dell for $849. In my experience with live Video capture I have found that it's the throughput and not the storage that is usually the issue. Capturing 5 live video feeds will require some significant processing power. The other option is to install dedicated Video Capture Cards. You will be installing a DVI video card because there are no servers that have DVI output. If you start installing a bunch of PCI cards then you'll have to step up to a server with more expansion. One of the best Video Capture Cards available today is the Aja Xena line of products. http://www.aja.com/html/products_windows.html Instead of going with a Rackmount Server you could get a Precision Desktop with DVI output and install a Video Capture Card. There are tons of different ways to do this. Will Beene 903-453-0835
