[SOS] R740 3x GPU Upgrade: Need Part Validation Before Purchase – Thanks for Your Help!

We are a small startup in need of help. We are looking to convert a R740 server to integrate 3x GPUs. We don’t have a large budget, which is why we need to do it ourselves. If you notice any issues or inconsistencies we haven’t considered, despite our research, please don’t hesitate to let us know. Thank you in advance to everyone who helps us validate the action plan so we can order the parts and launch the upgrade project. We want to integrate:

  • an NVIDIA L4 GPU card in the slot above the power supplies.
  • a second NVIDIA L4 GPU card in the central slot.
  • keep the original 3x8 riser (on the right) to install an NVIDIA T1000 LP card + a riser card with x4 M2 slots for NVMe.

I saw that we should start by purchasing the GPU Enablement Kit: 490-BEIX (JKFGX), but the price is too high for us (~€1,200) and it includes unnecessary parts (cables), so we are considering buying used parts. For info, the 70W L4 GPUs do not require power cables. Here are the selected components:

  • GPU Airflow = 0RFFDP
  • Mylar Foam = YH10H
  • Fan x6 = 4VXP3

Regarding the heatsinks + bracket: I’m not sure about the correct part number to order. According to my research, I should buy 0TRJT7 + XPDVP, but in a post I read, the correct reference is: C6R9H PowerEdge R740 High Performance Heatsink. They look completely different physically. Can you help me confirm the correct part number for my upgrade project? (For info: current processor is 4210R, upgrading to Xeon 6252 or 6248).

Regarding the riser with cage to install the L4 GPU above the power supplies: According to my research, I need 0DTTHJ. Can you confirm this?

Regarding the riser with cage to install the L4 GPU in the central slot: According to my research, only the GHGTP reference works, but I can’t find this riser with the GPU cage anywhere, only the riser card alone. I read that the MDDTD reference is compatible in the center, but not validated by Dell. Can you confirm that the correct GPU-ready reference for the central slot is GHGTP? And can you explain why I can only find the riser card alone, but never with the GPU cage?

Many thanks to the experts who take the time to answer and help us.

Hello,

I would recommend contacting a Technical Sales Representative. We don't typically build out systems but the Sales team could get your requirements and supply you options.

Some information I can provide on GPU Enablement Kit (490-BEIX / 330-BBMO / JKFGX / 85CYN)

  • The official kit part for Europe is 490-BEIX (Spare JKFGX); for the US it’s 330-BBMO (Spare 85CYN). These kits include the GPU air shroud (0RFFDP), Mylar foam (YH10H), six fans (4VXP3), brackets, heatsinks       and necessary cables.
  • If you opt for used parts, ensure you obtain each component separately:
    • Air shroud: 0RFFDP
    • Foam: YH10H
    • Fans: 4VXP3 ×6

Heatsink & Bracket for Xeon CPUs

  • The high-performance heatsink you referenced, C6R9H, is the correct spare part used in the GPU kit.

Notes

Slot above PSUs (Riser 3A)

0DTTHJ

Verified GPU-ready riser with x8+x16 config

Central slot (Riser 2A/1D)

0GHGTP

Dell-specified GPU riser; typically found only as riser card, GPU cage comes from kit (490-BEIX)

  • MDDTD (0MDDTD) is a standard dual x16 riser but not PCIe-GPU specific; lacks Dell validation for GPU use.
  • The GHGTP GPU riser card is the correct component for the center slot, and the GPU cage assembly is delivered with the enablement kit (490-BEIX)—not sold individually.

  • GPU Kit: 490-BEIX (JKFGX) contains everything except the GPUs themselves.
  • Heatsink: Use C6R9H for standard Xeon 6252/6248 TDP levels.
  • Riser Above PSUs: 0DTTHJ.
  • Central Slot Riser: 0GHGTP + included GPU cage from the kit.
  • Right Slot Riser: Retain existing 3×8 riser for T1000 LP + NVMe module.

Additional Considerations

  • Ensure you have at least 1100 W power supplies if using multiple GPUs—even low-power L4 may still impact power draw slightly.
  • Strict PCIe airflow compliance: fans and foam installation mandatory.
  • All GPUs must be of the same type and model.
  • You can install up to three double-wide or six single-wide GPUs.
  • The filler bracket on the GPU air shroud must be removed before installing the GPU.
  • Ensure that high-performance fans, and GPU air shroud are installed.

I don’t see these GPU on the validated parts list for the R740. It doesn't mean they won't work, only that Dell has not validated or support them on the R740.
