system board riser cable or interconnect failure on R820
Got this problem when changing server location.
It shows "the system board riser cable or interconnect is not connected or is improperly connected", and, can't boot the server.
I have tried unplug and plug the riser, still got the same problem.
BTW,I am able to login iDRAC webpage.
Please help.

Hello
Something likely came loose during the move. Reseat all risers and the cards in the risers. If the issue persists after reseating everything then start removing cards to see if the error goes away. Most likely something is just loose, but something may have been damaged. A faulty or loose PCIe card could cause riser errors.
Thanks

Hi Daniel,
I have taken the cards and risers off and put only needed cards, and put all risers back, still get 2 error message and, the first is "System board Riser 1 cable or interconnect...."
I saw another post here mentioned, the server can still boot with this message, how to do that? there is none cards needed to be on riser 1, but even I remove riser 1, I still get the error message.
What else I can do?
Thanks, Andrew

My documentation states that all risers are required for POST on the R820.
If you have another right riser(riser 1) to swap with then I would do that. Also, make sure you are looking around for anything in the system that may be loose or damaged. CPU2 has the PCIe controller for riser 1. I would make sure all memory on the B lane and CPU2 are fully seated and not damaged. You could also try swapping the CPUs.
Also, make sure the power supplies are fully seated and not producing errors. If the system is not receiving adequate power it may cause a POST failure like you are experiencing instead of a power or voltage error.
Thanks

Hi Daniel,
Thanks again. I only removed 2 cards, Dell 06H20P single Port PCI-E FC HBA Adapter Card.
I really don't know what I missed,
I am in Springfield of MA, how to find if there is a qualified Dell hardware engineer around?
Thanks, Andrew

I'm not aware of any partners that provide onsite troubleshooting services. I checked our partner page and technical support or troubleshooting is not a search option. The onsite techs we use for warranty repair do not troubleshoot. If troubleshooting is required they call in to tech support and are directed on what to do.
If the issue persists after taking the system to minimum-to-POST and swapping all parts that you can then the next step is to replace the remaining parts. You would start by replacing the most likely parts. The most likely part would be riser 1. If the issue persists after replacing riser 1 then the next possibility would be with the slot, so the motherboard would be the next likely component.
Thanks

Hi Daniel,
if I can pay Dell onsite techs to solve the issue? And, how?
Thanks, Andrew

I don't think we offer that service. If you are out of warranty you can call technical support to inquire about fee-based support options. I don't think we have any fee-based support options that include onsite techs or onsite troubleshooting though. Fee-based does not include parts replacement either. If you pay for fee-based support they will walk you through the troubleshooting steps over the phone and assist you to troubleshoot the issue.
Our technical support teams that can explain your fee-based options are only available over the phone. Call the appropriate technical support number for your region. You should be routed according to your warranty level when you enter the express service code.
