Working network daughterboard for R740

PowerEdge R740 (a couple running Hyper-V cluster)

I went with Dell OCm14104B-U1-D Quad-Port 10Gb 10GbE NDC Network Daughter Card 4X4RK in both

and that is a disaster on Server 2016 OS

This card is not supported by Broadcom, as it is Dell specific

This card was never certified for any server OS - https://www.windowsservercatalog.com/

Dell drivers/firmware are OLD, very OLD.

I had new updated given by Broadcom, but still  getting all sorts of random errors (on either server)

Emulex OneConnect OCm14104B-N1-D 4-port 10GbE rNDC NIC : The network device detected an error.

Emulex OneConnect OCm14104B-N1-D 4-port 10GbE rNDC NIC #4 : The network device detected an error.

Emulex OneConnect OCm14104B-N1-D 4-port 10GbE rNDC NIC #2 : The network device detected an error.

Emulex OneConnect OCm14104B-N1-D 4-port 10GbE rNDC NIC #3 : The network device detected an error.

Usually that ends in Hyper-V node crashing out from cluster

So the question is: does anybody using any RNDC that is supported & is known to be fully working?

In worse case PCI-e SFP+ dual port card? Preferably one with rDMA?

Hi,

I don't see that part - 4x4RK as supported in the R740. All the Emulex cards I see as supported in the server are full height PCI cards from the LightPulse series. We do have part 68M95. which is an Intel 10GB fibre channel rNDC, as an example of a validated rNDC. That one does not have RDMA, but XVVY1, a QLogic 41164 10GbE SFP+ card does.

And where do I find "not supported" bit?

It is the same size, it fits, it (almost) works, it is on Dell website

OK, it might have different part no 540-BBNX, Dell still provides drivers (even if old)

Sadly QLogic 41164 does not seem to be supported by ANY Server OS either!

The link you shared - https://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/EmulexOCm14104B_N1_D4_Quad_port_SFP_10GBe_EthernetOnly_rNDC.pdf - this identifies the card in question as being intended for use in 13G systems. The driver link you shared has a compatible systems list near the bottom of the page. Unfortunately, the R740 is not listed.

I would recommend using a card that was validated. While this card may work, you may run into problems. Without being able to go more in-depth with it, I wouldn't be able to tell you if a simple card switch would solve the problems with crashing, I'm afraid, but it would allow you to at least isolate potential sources of crashes.

And that is exactly the problem I am facing. Scattered info everywhere, no proper answer from nowhere

Yes, swapped card for QLogic & have no more problems.

So indeed this Emulex card is no good for 14G (and I do not think it is hardware, it is simply that Dell decided to never update software for it)

Pity, but that is life in IT
