Write performance on R320 with H710 mini & RAID5
Hi all,
Yes, I said RADI5
My issue is that I have inherited an R320 with a H710 mini with 3x (8TB - 6Gbps) drives in RAID5, the issue is extremely poor write performance (around 50-60MB/s). This is causing issues with the backups that are being sent to it as it cannot write as fast as the data is being sent, causing countless backup failures...
Anyway, I was thinking of a cost-effective solution of replacing the 3x8TB (giving 14TB in RAID5) with 2x18TB in RAID1 which should hopefully increase the write speed by a bit.
I have a couple of questions...
1) Is there anything I can look at to improve the write performance, or is that what would be expected? It seems incredibly slow?
2) Given the suggestion above, what improvement should I see in the write speed?
Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions.

Hello gavin2812,
I'm sure you have found the many resources on improving hard drive write performance so I can provide some Dell hardware recommendations. Please note Dell Technical support does not provide performance tuning as part of warranty or software support contracts. We do provide break and fix support for issues that can result in poor performance.
Use Dell branded drives that have firmware optimized to work with our PERC controllers.
You can find some drives listed here and if you don't see what you are looking for contact Sales to see if it's available

Use Write back instead of write through
Ensure you're on the latest system and storage chain firmware: iDRAC, BIOS, Backplane, Hard drive firmware, PERC controller firmware/driver

If you suspect a hardware problem you can run the built in Hardware Diagnostics:
Boot to F11 on Dell Splash screen, selecting Boot Manager -> System Utilities -> Launch Dell Diagnostics. Note any messages and continue testing.

Hello Charles,
Many thanks for your reply.
Changing from Write back instead of write through nearly doubled performance for me, many thanks for taking the time to reply, much appreciated.
