EmailXtenter mailbox move
We currently have our journaling mailbox on the same server as our reciepents mailboxes. We see as a best practice that is should be on a seperate server. is there a procedure to move the mailbox in addition to just using ESM in Exchange.(do I need to stop journaling first etc?)
thanks
thanks

I have the journaling mailbox on the same server, but in its own storage group, so that the log files and information store are separated (from an Exchange DR or maintenance perspective).
Besides, moving the mailbox is quite easy:
- Stop the incoming messages and disconnet from the mailbox (Option a. by Deleting a Mailbox Connector (adminguide.pdf 3-38) by b. stopping all EmailXtender services).
- Then you can move the mailbox by using the Exchange Tasks "Move Mailbox Wizard".
- Check that you can open Outlook on the EX server and access the mailbox okay (meaning the Outlook profile on the server has read the changed servername from Exchange)
- Afterwards just use a. Adding an Exchange Mailbox Connector (adminguide.pdf 3-33) or b. start all Emailxtender services.
This should be fairly straight forward. Hope this helps,
Jochen.

I am referring to the ExAdmin Guide in version 4.81.209. I guess the numbering is not the same (though the header should be).
No, this is not the same as I described although this is also working (obviously, is coming from the Admin Guide)!
We don't have to fuzz around too much... you can choose either option. EX is quite robust; if you move the mailbox even while EX is running and you've not stopped the mail collection, you'll see some error events. Just open Outlook after you've moved the mailbox so the Outlook profile is updated!
In 3-38 "Deleting a Mailbox Connector" I was refering to the following:
To delete a mailbox connector:
1. In the Tree view of the EmailXtender Administrator, right-click the EmailVault node and select Properties from the shortcut menu. The Vault Properties dialog box opens.
2. Select the Email Connection Mailboxes tab.
3. Select the mailbox connector you want to delete and then click Delete.
Obviously remember what was in there that you can add the mailbox later. This action will need to be activated under "Options" in the menue.
Hope, this helps,
Jochen.

I see this option in the EX Admin guide p 3-36
Method 2: Using the General Tab in Folder Properties
You can disable message collection on the General tab of the Folder
Properties dialog box.
-Multiple Folders If there are multiple folders in the EmailXtender system, you can
either disable message collection for a single folder or for the entire
system. To disable message collection for the entire system, you must
disable message collection on the General tab of the Folder Properties
dialog box for every folder.
-Single Folder If you have a single folder, remember that disabling message
collection for the folder prevents EmailXtender from collecting any
mail.
-To use the General tab to disable message collection, refer to The
General Tab on page 3-31.
I have a single folder, that is what I would disable? is this what you are referring to as "Option a. by Deleting a Mailbox Connector "

- journaling mailbox (open Outlook on the EX server and see the number of items in the inbox drop)
- open "Computer Management", under "Services and Applications" you'll see "Message Queuing". Expand this and select "Private Queues". Just see things move through the various queues.
- Send an emails to yourself/whomever and see they are indexed after some time!
There are various other places within the EX directory struture, but we leave those for the future!
Regards, Jochen.

Don't bother contacting support. The event logs are not very specific so that one would know where/what to troubleshoot.
What's the Category of the event?

But the "Exchange Mailbox Component" connects to the Exchange. I would somehow guess that your service accout doesn't have the correct permissions connecting to the Exchange server.
Is that possible? You need to say if the setup was done correctly.
Can you access your journaling (and any other mailbox) okay?
What version of Exchange are you running? 2003 with SP2.
I would thoroughly check the permissions again (according to the Installation Guide). With Exchange 2003 SP2, there were changes in the way how to grant full mailbox access to the mailboxes.
In case it's E2k3 SP2, the article talks about mobile devices. The permission setup is pretty much the same as Blackberry.

I am busy the rest of the week but try to check in the evenings.
Good luck, Jochen.
