80 gig harddrive question

I have the XPS 140 with the 80 gig hard drive. I know normally an 80 gig hard drive is some were about 74 gigs actually. but my hard drive is showin total space at 68 gigs why?

Close to 10 Gigs is gone for the PC Symantec restore option( a partition set aside for restores), and the other is explained easily by the Dell Media Direct and the OS install. A total close to 12 Gigs is about right. If you reformat and lose the restore partion you'll get it back. But it's nice to have in case you don't have the disk suite and if your mobile somewhere with a crash.

The Dell restore and utility partitions use about 6G. The rest is the discrepancy between the binary (74) and decimal (80) definition of a gigabyte.

I have a similar hard-drive question. I ordered my Inspiron 1505 with 60GB hard drive. In 'My Computer", it has a C-drive with 37GB, (including the operating system), and a D-drive with 12GB, or a total of 49GB. Is the 12GB for the PC Symantec? If so, I do not understand why to total is only 49GB; if it is not for PC Symantec, will I be able to use that space some day?

Look also using Windows Disk Management, which shows partitions otherwise hidden from Windows, and see if those numbers add up.

The D: partition is created for storing additional images you can make using the trial version of Ghost, but the D: partition can also be used for other purposes of your choice.
