DVD-R vs DVD+R

I've got an Inspiron 8600 and I'm trying to burn a DVD using Sonic RecordNow (which came with the computer). The DVD Module has a dell label - DVD+RW. The software doesn't seem to recognize DVD-R disks, only DVD+R. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a hardware or software limitation? Are there potential functionality problems using DVD+R rather than DVD-R disks?

The problem may most likely lie with your optical drive.

Could you state what make and model drive it is?

I'm hoping that this is enough info on the manufacturer, the device manager identifies the drive as: hl-dt-st dvd+rw gca-4040n. I'm not sure if that includes a manufacture name or not. I googled the name and it looks like other people are having a similiar problem, but I didn't see any clear solutions. There was some mention of an ASPI layer, but I don't know what that is. Any suggestions?
