Hi, Jollery:
You've said everything about the card except what kind of card it is. Is it a CF, SD, SDHC, MSPD, etc.?

Osprey, I googled it for you. It seems to be a special kind of compact flash. It's $170.00!

Thanks Osprey4, It's a CF card in a Nikon D700 camera. Nothing unusual about the card but the player won't accept it.

If I understand your problem, you are saying it won't physically fit into the CF slot. This is one of those problems where it's impossible to suggest anything since I can't see the card or your computer. Do the dimensions of this new card match those of other CF cards you own? Are you sure you're inserting the card with the pin holes facing into the slot?

Hi osprey4, the card fits neatly in the slot but will not connect. It's a cf type 1 card, 36x 42 mm with 50 pin holes, maybe its a type 2 socket in the card reader.
Thanks for taking the time. I'll have to dig further.

The other type is thicker and has keying so it wont go into the socket.
Its probably a mini hard drive and not a ram card.
SanDisk CF Type I/II ImageMate USB 2.0 Reader/Writer (Model SDDR-92-A15)
will work as will any that says Takes both Type1 and Type2 (Best Buy Carries these)

Ok, I'll take another stab at this.
I think it's a drive letter conflict. That's my favorite theory as to why a new flash memory device won't show up. Remove all other removable storage devices and try again.

If you have mapped network drives they sometimes dont show up until you change their drive letter.
There are also conditions in Vista where flash devices dont enumerate.
Not seeing any flash device can be an INF PROBLEM
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941600/en-us
This is caused by a corrupted INFCACHE.1 file. This file is hidden,
has restricted access, and can be found in "c:\windows\inf".
This file stores the location of drivers and their INF files.
Delete this file and it will force Windows to rebuild the INFCACHE.1
file the next time Windows searches for drivers.
To delete this file, you have to set the security permissions of it to
allow Full Control for the User Group Administrators or full control for
your account. Here's the complete how-to:
1. Open a Windows Explorer window (right click Start> Explore)
2. In the address bar, type c:\windows\inf and press Enter
3. Right click on the file INFCACHE.1
4. Select Properties
5. Click on the "Security" tab
6. Click "Edit" to edit permissions
7. Click "Add" to add User Groups
8. Type "Administrators" in the User Groups field and click ok
9. Set Administrators to "Full Control" and click ok
10. Move or delete the file "INFCACHE.1"
11. Reinstall a device to force Windows to rebuild the "INFCACHE.1" file
(not the one you were having problems with)

Hi Osprey4 and Speedstep.
My problem is solved. I was fairly certain the card wasn't entering the socket properly so I removed the drive and checked with a magnifying
glass and found 2 bent pins. This is the first time this CF socket was used in the drive so I dont know how they got bent. However, the card now responds and I thank you again for taking the time.
