It should, but you may want to consider another option - replace the hard drive with a solid state drive. It'll boost the system performance appreciably. You can find first-tier 500G SSDs at around the $120-150 price point these days (Samsung, Intel, Micron/Crucial).

The hard drive has indeed failed and yes, you must replace it.
