HDD trouble

Thanks to Automatic updates, I have to reinstall windows after just having finished reinstalling winows. Thankfully I have 2 HDDs which allowed me to do this, but the problem I am having now is when I have the 1 HDD plugged in that had all the automatic update's on it, the computer wont boot. I just want to wipe that HDD but I cant seem to get the computer to not hang when I have the other HDD on.

That may sound confusing so i'll put it like this.

HDD 1 had window automatic updates on it

HDD 2 was completely clean

HDD 1 lost it's ability to boot up windows

I unplugged HDD 1 and reinstalled windows on HDD 2.

Now, with HDD 2 plugged in ALONE windows will boot. Even in the order of HDD 2 in the SATA 0 spot and HDD 1 in the SATA 1 spot, the system still will not boot if I have HDD 1 plugged in, period.

Perhaps I am over looking a setting in the BIOS? Just need a little help with this one and then i'll address my Automatic Updates problem later.

The error code 0F00:1A44 indicates a bad hard drive.

Since you have another drive, just reinstall on that drive.

Oh man... so there's nothing I can do about that drive then? it's totally dead huh?

Hakaibutsu

Yep, the hard drive is toast and needs to be replaced.

Sorry, I have an XPS 630i running windows vista 32-bit

I can run the diagnostic disk yes. I will attempt to test the drive and see what happen's. Would I do this using the "quick test" method or the Symptom Tree?

Hi Hakaibutsu,

You haven't provided the model of your Dell or your operating system. That would be helpful to know.

Right off the bat, it seems to me that your HDD 1 may have a issue. Can you boot to the Dell diagnostics disc and test the drive?

I would run the extended test.

I did not run the extended test, instead I ran a test of the driver itself. The extended test was going to test the entire computer. I'm only concerned about the HDD in question at this time. What I came up with was 2 errors. Both these errors were for the same block.

Error Code f00:1A44

MsgL DISK_1 - Block 314528526: Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.

Uncorrectable... it just keeps getting better....

This is becoming rather complicated...

Well this sucks. Now im scared to run Windows Automatic Updates with my last remaining drive.

I guess my only question now is, if I decide to buy a new HDD, what should I look at on this old HDD to help me decide what kind of new one I need? Is it as simple as buy a new SATA HDD or is there more to it than that?

It's a bummer when a hard drive fails.   :emotion-6:

You can install any 3.5", 7200rpm SATA hard drive, the Western Digital and Seagate brands are good.   You don't have to buy from Dell, a compatible hard drive can be purchased from any online, or local computer store, check out www.newegg.com

Ps. As a point of interest, the motherboard and video card in my Inspiron 530mt failed today, luckily the warranty still has 35 days left before expiring.   :emotion-2:

Yeah, it was a seagate that acutally crashed on me. Thanks for the insight as far at the requirements go. Im sorry to hear about your motherboard too. At least neither one of us is alone in computer problems huh? Lucked out on your warrenty though.

Thank you everyone who helped me in this matter, for me, it's better to know I have a dead HDD than to not know what's wrong with it at all.

Hakaibutsu

Happy to have helped.

Most of the new drives have a three year manufacturer's warranty.

John.

I was a bit disappointed about it happening, but at least I had a knowledgable Dell Techie handling the case.  :emotion-21:

Already know the answers to the issue before calling, but had to go through all the troubleshooting steps again, which is understandable.  :emotion-5:

This will make it, a hard drive, motherboard and video card, all failing within the last three months.  :emotion-3:
