How do I flash a Philips 8701

So maybe I did this wrong then.. What I created was a dos boot disk.  Do I need to make a bootable disk of the flash file?  If so how do I go about doing that?

To use the boot disk, you reboot your system with the disk in
the drive.  It will install the Firmware at that time.

Here is what I did:

 

Downloaded and extracted R120512.exe to c:\DELL\drivers\R120512

Created a dos boot disk using Win 98 SE

Booted to a:\ and changed to c:\

typed in c:\DELL\drivers\R120512  and pressed enter

 

Got the error as mentioned above.  I also tried many variations of the command with the same results.

You take the DOS boot disk that you created and put it into the floppy
drive.  Then you restart the system.  The system will read the floppy
disk during the startup and install the Firmware.

Do not change the first boot device to C:\.  You want to boot from
device A:\.  A:\ is the floppy and that is waht you want to boot from.
You need to type nothing or do anything.

Put the floppy disk into the floppy drive and simply restart your system.

I guess I am just not able to figure this out.  And what your telling me doesn't work.  Here is Dell specific instructions on installing it from your HD.

 

Hard Drive Installation (via WinZip) of DOS Utility for R120512.EXE

Download

1.Click the location, e.g. Americas, from which you want to download the file.
2.When the File Download window appears, click Save this program to disk and click OK. The Save In window appears.
3.From the Save In drop-down menu, click to select Desktop and then click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
4.If a Download Complete window appears, click Close. A new icon appears on your desktop.

Install

1. Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R120512.EXE.
2. The Self-Extractor window appears and prompts you to extract or unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R120512. If you did not print these instructions, write down this path. The WinZip Self-Extractor window appears.
3. Click OK.
4. If the Self-Extractor window is still open, close it.
5. Create a DOS boot disk. For more information, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article TT1014475 – “What can I use for a boot disk with CD-ROM support?”
6. Insert the floppy disk into the floppy drive and reboot the computer.
7. At the A:/> prompt, type C: and then press the [ENTER] key.
8. Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R120512 and then press [ENTER].
9. Follow the on-screen instructions.

but thats for a bootable cd if you don't have a floppy drive.

 

The one thing I am missing may be the Hard Drive Installation (via WinZip) of DOS Utility and I have no idea what that is or understanding the instructions I guess.

I have senior moments all the time... I am running windows xp pro and want to flash cause i keep getting a device not ready or no media is inserted into drive when I try and create a bootable recovery disk for System Mechanic.  I have already contacted them and followed their instructions.

 

Just thought I would try flashing to see if it made ne diffrence. :smileywink:

AS far as I know just System Mechanic...Yea I know already contacted them.  Told to do a complete uninstall and reinstall.  Guess what. lol

OK, I finally understand.  (I had a senior moment.)  I do not know
why it is not working for you.
 

However, I have a question.  Are you running LINUX operating system? 

Why do you want to 'flash' the drive?

I too am curious why the 'flash' will not work out.  But, I do not think
the 'flash' will help out.  I think your drive is fine.  There is something
about System mechanics that is wrong.

The 'flash' is for LINUX.  Are you trying to write to a DVD or a CD?  If a DVD,

what format (+R or -R) and brand.  Does the drive usually read and write
CDs and DVDs? 

Can you write to those discs outside of the System Mechanics program?
Or are you having trouble writing to the discs only with System Mechanics?

Trying to write to a cd-rw , a dvd+rw, a cd-r anything that might work. Brands are Verbatium, Memorex, TDK, and Imagination.  This drive is a DVD +-RW DVD8701.

I agree with you 100% it more than likely System Mechanic, but it bugs the he..ll out of me why I can't flash it.  It's a mission thing now.  :smileywink:
