M6300 hardrive clicks when XP starts up

Hi there. I have a Dell M6300.

I recently upgraded the original hardrive (a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 80GB model # ST980813AS) with a brand new Seagate Momentus 7200.2 120GB model # ST9120823AS. The new Seagate 120GB hardrive starts making harsh mecahinical like clicking noises just after the Dell BIOS post finishes and during Windows XP start-up screen appears. The clicking noises appear to stop after Windows XP finishes its startup.  The original Seagate 80GB hard drive makes no noises at all.

Thanks in advance,

I would backup your data and call the MFG of the hard drive and get a new one. It sounds like it might be getting bad already, even though its new.

Thanks for the response.

However, I just found out something very curious.  If I take the four hard drive retaining screws out of the bottom of the M6300 and leave the Seagate 120GB hard drive installed I don't get the clicking sound on startup and the M6300 boots up into XP perfectly. If I put the screws back in it goes back to making the clicking sound on start up. I've done this several times with screws in and out and get the same results.  Again no problems at all with the original Seagate 80GB hard drive.

Anymore advice?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there.

The hard drive was wonky. I took it back. The replacement hard drive works perfectly.
