Saving Photo Data...

Have a hard drive with one too many viruses, Trojans, spyware... but need to save the family pictures.

1. Can I download the photos to an exterenal hard drive without any of the viruses being transfered?

Computer is a Dell, Windows XP, Dim 2400, 37 Hard drive, 640 memory, 2.56 MHz

I was told that I could download these photos  into a external hard drive, do a anti-virus scan of that drive and it should be ok. Anyone see a problem with that advice?

Good news. I downloaded the photos from a corrupted computer to an enternal hard drive. As soon as I connected to a good computer I did a scan with the program avast and the drive had no junk in it. So the probklem has now been solved. Now I just have to find a windows XP disk I can use to do a complete reload of the the Windows XP program on the old computer.
