Writing to DVD-R or DVD+R
I am trying to copy files to DVD-R and DVD+R discs. I have a Dimension 8200 using Windows XP Profeesional. My DVD drive is NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A and I am using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. The message I get is Does this mean I need a different disc drive for DVD-R or DVD+R? I could format DVD+R/W discs.
Thanks for your help.

Hi D-T,
The NEC 1100 supports writing to the DVD+R or DVD+RW media, DVD-R will not work. Also if you have not done so, consider updating Roxio to the latest available update for your version. Verify that you have DMA enabled and also the latest firmware from Dell for this drive, should be in the FAQ link at the top of this conference.

Hi D-T,
The firmware for the NEC 1100a has no bearing on which system the drive is installed in. Also the Dell firmware does not convert the drive to a dual format device, so you still will not be able to use DVD-R or DVD-RW media.
However for now, Dell will allow me to post this information as long as I include the following disclaimer:
"The use of a non-validated Dell firmware will void the warranty on the drive, you use at your own risk"
The Dangerous Brothers have a firmware that will convert the NEC 1100a to a NEC 1300a that does support writing to both formats:

Hi Jeff,
I've visited the website above and downloaded NEC1100A.ZIP. Is this the file I need to "upgrade" my dell OEM nd-1100A so that it will write DVD-r and DVD-rw ? Maybe I am missing something, but the site itself didn't really explain what would happen, the one link I visited explained some region removal "upgrades".
Thanks,
Alex
