Importing User-generated Name field to ECC

Hi

Is there a possibility to import the User-generated Name from the VCMDB to ECC. I'm asking the question because I'm not running host agents and I just have the WWN's of the host.

Thank you in Advance

Any reason for not running host agents?

We have multiple clients on different networks that don't talk due to security concerns, thats why we do not use agents on the hosts.

Thats a reasonable enough response. I was curious more then anything as to why. Unfortunately I dont think I can answer your question, although I dont believe you can import the user-generated name field into ControlCenter without the use of the agents. Although I am not certain on that, so let's see if someone else can answer it for us both.

short answer is no (but..). ECC has no way of opening the VCMdb and reading the user defined fields. But if you use custom fields, you can write a script that will take the output of the VCMdb parse it, and insert the info into custom fields. Probably not want you want but that is the closest I can get you. ECC wants/needs to get its info from agents. that is how it is designed.

Now that I have said that, EMC Engineering might have some really nifty super secret tool that no one knows about that can do it. But dont count on it.

In my previous employer had a similar setup - we just created generic containers and manually maintained the relationship which was a nuisance but serviceable.

Unfortunately I never could find a way to automate keeping both in sync. I would love to see ECC update the VCM aliases even with host agents.
