Dell Update Windows Universal Application Won't Install

For SupportAssist there is an update under drivers called Dell Update Windows Universal Application that won't install. After downloading it and Restarting computer, it still shows as an update that needs to be installed and says a restart is needed. I tried 3x and get the same results.

Hi PatSSSS:

What is your Dell computer model and Windows operating system? If you use Win 10 or Win 11 please include the edition (Home, Pro, etc.), version (21H2, 22H2, etc.) and OS build number shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications.

What is the current edition of Dell Update (e.g., Dell Update, Dell Command | Update, Dell Update for Windows Universal, Dell/Alienware Update Windows Universal Application, etc.) and version shown at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and features?

If you're sure you downloaded the correct Dell Update installer recommended for your computer model and OS, have you tried saving the .EXE installer to your desktop, right-clicking, and choosing "Run as Administrator"?

If that doesn't help, does the Dell Client Management Service have Status of Running when you go to Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services?

I have an Inspiron 5584 / Win 10 Pro v22H2 laptop and an installer for Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.8.0 (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_0RCG0_WIN_4.8.0_A00.EXE) was posted on my Inspiron 5584 support page <here> on 31-Jan-2023, but v4.8.0 still isn't detected as an available update yet by either SupportAssist v3.13.2.14 or my current Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 (which isn't unusual - there's often a lag of a week or so before updates posted on my Dell support page are detected by my Dell utilities) so I haven't tried to update to v4.8.0 yet.

I received an email notice of the Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.0 that had a link to download the file. Downloaded the file and the installer stalls and won't finish.  Started a chat on Dell.com and explained the situation and was told my system is out of warranty and I'd have to sign up for technical support.  My issue is, why send me the email for a universal update and then not support that update.  Loosing faith in Dell.

Hi bgibsonaz1:

If you'd like help in the forum please let us know your Dell computer model, Windows OS (include the version and build shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications) and BIOS version. To find your BIOS version open a Run dialog box (Windows+R keys), enter msinfo32 to open your System Information panel, and look for the “BIOS Version/Date” field.

My previous Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.9.0 detected the v5.0.0 update on 04-Aug-2023 and the self-update ran to completion when I updated this way on my Inspiron 5584.

If you do try to perform a self-update this way just note that the interface will eventually show a "Installation Complete" message and warn that program will automatically close to finish the installation as shown below.  However, the app will not re-open once the installer has finished running in the background and restarted the Dell Client Management Service, so be patient and wait a few minutes after the interface closes before manually re-launching the app to confirm the v5.0.0 update installed correctly.

I have the same problem. I have downloaded the update 3 times in Support Assist (over the past 2 weeks), downloaded the update, and rebooted.  When I ran Support Assist again after the reboot, the same update appears as a needed download.  Repeated the same process on the Dell support website with the same result tonite.  I have a 15-7579 laptop with Windows 10 (can't handle 11).  I believe all my software is up to date.  Online info suggests this is a important update so I am pursuing this.

Hi @Graybeard9 :

Do you mean that you have a Dell Inspiron 15 7579 2-in-1, and does Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features show that you have Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.0.0 or earlier?

Did you try running a manual check for updates from Dell Update for Windows Universal? I do not have SupportAssist v3.14.x installed on my Inspiron 5584 and when I ran a manual check for updates from Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.0.0 on 03-Nov-2023 it detected and installed the v5.1.0 update.

If Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x cannot self-update to v5.1.0 then go to your support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-15-7579-2-in-1-laptop/drivers and expand the Visit List section **, click the This Device tab, and enter your unique Service Tag to filter the results for your system configuration.  If Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.1.0 is still recommended for your system then download the latest .exe installer (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_534C4_WIN_5.1.0_A00.EXE, rel. 31-Oct-2023) and save it to your desktop, and then right-click and chose Run as Administrator.

** NOTE: If you do not see the Visit List section on the support page for your Inspiron 15 7579 2-in-1 that displays all recommended updates then click the blue Check for Updates button first.  Kudos to garioch7 for suggesting this workaround in my 24-Oct-2023 topic Recommended Updates (View List) Not Displayed on Inspiron 15 5584 Support Page.

Hi @Dell_Fan_XXL :

I confirmed the support page for your XPS 15 7590 at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/xps-15-7590-laptop/drivers currently recommends Dell Command | Update for Windows Universal v5.3.0 (Dell-Command-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_P83K5_WIN_5.3.0_A00.EXE, rel. 30-Apr-2024) so I assume your installation error occurs because you are using a Windows Insider (beta) Preview build of Win 11 v24H2.  According to the 23-Apr-2024 Windows Central article Windows 11 2024 Update (version 24H2): New features, AI PCs, Windows on Arm, and everything we know so far a stable build of Win 11 v24H2 isn't due for release until some time around September 2024, so for now I doubt there's anything you can do about this other than to report your installation error to Dell customer support.  If your Dell service warranty hasn't expired yet click the blue "Get Help Now" button at the bottom-right of this forum webpage to start a live chat.

I noticed there is also a Dell/Alienware Update for Windows Universal v5.3.0 currently offered on your XPS 15 7590 support page, so be sure to click the "This Device" tab and enter your unique Service Tag just to confirm that Dell Command | Update for Windows Universal v5.3.0 is the correct edition of Dell Update that matches your system components.

Also, is your BIOS version a typo? Your support page currently recommends Dell XPS 15 7590 System BIOS v1.27.0 (XPS_7590_1.27.0.exe, rel. 07-Mar-2024), not v1.37.0.
