Annoying 4096 hypers per processor limit

Hey guys,

I'm working on a big project that requires a lot of devices to be mapped accross almost all DMX4 FA's.
I came to find that I cannot map more than 4096 hypers (meta members included) on a single FA processor.
This limit is really annoying.
I understand that this limit wasn't removed in the new V-Max as well.

I came to the conclusion that my only options are:
1) Increase hyper size. Which I don't want to do, since my entire site has a single hyper size (15GB). Will limit my SRDF options later on.
2) Split the devices between FA's. Also a bad option, since I used up all 32 processors for connecting hosts.
3) Replace the cache slot from 32GB to 64GB and replace 4 of the cache slots with FAs. Will give me a poor performance. costs money.

Anymore ideas?
When will this limit be removed?!

Thanks,
Maxim

Options 1 and 2 are usually what we suggest.

When will this limit be removed?!

Not soon, AFAIK. Don't hold your breath. :D

Why oh why?!

I can't understand why EMC insists on this limit.
It can't be anything that difficult. Especially when the number of devices per hba and per server exceed 10,000...

Maxim,

The hyper limit is more based on physical limitations due to hardware restrictions on the Symmetrix. The H/W restriction is based on the amount of physical Non-Volitional DRAM (NVD RAM) that we have on the director board itself. Each hyper is given a table on the director's NVD. So in essence, if we were to double the amount of hypers per FA, then we would essentially need to double the amount of NVD RAM on the director.

I wouldn't want to speculate when the limit is bumped up, but if & when it is, it's probably because of a H/W change.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Thanks Chris.
I wasn't aware of that.

Since you said the limit would probably increase due to HW change, I would expect that the new V-Max would've dealt with this problem...

True, if the V-Max H/W was roughly the same as the DMX-3/4, and an upgrade or refresh of sorts, yes, I would have expected that as well. However, the V-Max H/W is a different beast from our previous Symmetrix model lines. You do get twice as many FA ports though with the V-Max. :)
