Does EMC DMX-3 support mixed raidness?

Hi, have a quick question. Does EMC DMX-3 support mixed raidness? for example, can I have half config as RAID10 and half config as RAID5? assuming I am already in the latest enginuity level.
Thanks and looking forward to your answers.

Yes, you can

Yije,
There are some more informations about your question

Generally speaking you can use several RAID modes.
You can use:
RAID 1
RAID 10 or RAID 1/0 (one is for mainframe other for open system)
RAID5
RAID6

As I know all types of RAID¿s can coexist in one symetrix box.

RAID 5 and RAID 6 can be set up in a two ways:
RAID5 (3+1) and (7+1)
RAID6 (6+2) and (14+2)

I found the information that both RAID5¿s types can coexist. So it means that you can define some disks in RAID5 (3+1) and other in (7+1). I can¿t see the reason why, but you can.

For more information about RAID implementation in DMX family you can see: ¿Symmetrix DMX-3 Product Guide -- A07¿ in EMC PowerLink

You just have to be careful of what you want to mix based on your Enginuity level. You say you are at the latest, but if you REALLY are then you are in a real minority.

Currently EMC's recommended level for DMX3 is still 5771, with 5772 for DMX4. 5773 is out there (but not a lot of it yet).

I can't remember specifically, but I believe 5772 introduced RAID6 and 5773 allowed mixing RAID 5 types. I'm absolutely certain that 5771 can't do either (you have to pick RAID5 (3+1) or (7+1) and stick with it.

Allen you are completly right. It mainly depends on the code. 5771 (as you noted) requires you to choose a single RAID5 type. You can mix mirror and RAID .. but RAID means either 3+1 or 7+1 depending on a "variable" in the binfile.

And you remember perfectly .. ;-)

Thanks Stefano,

I rarely have time to dig up the actual documents with this stuff in it for replies, but at least my memory works for something. Now if only it would start working for the things my wife wants me to remember... :-(

That is why Man invented PDAs : To Keep Man Out Of Trouble With Wife.

Unfortunately I would get in trouble with my wife for suggesting I need a PDA ("What... MORE technology???")

You just can't win, eh?

That's why you are supposed to tell them that it is required for your job ;-)

But then the company should be paying for it. I'm not even going to get into what happens if I try and hide money being spent (my wife is a Project Manager and was trained as an accountant. She knows where ALL the money is!)

5772 allows RAID5(3+1) and RAID5(7+1) at the same time.....

Allen,
General comment.
I don¿t know EMC recommendation abort level of microcode but based on official EMC documentation I can use both 5771 and 5772 (on DMX-3)
We bought DMX-3 one year ago and as I remember in summer 2007 ¿5772¿ was real new but not today.

Are there two different polices about microcode level in EMC ?
One official and one unofficial ? :)

Hmmm I'm not 100% sure .. however 5771 is "old" .. 5772 is the default for both DMX3 and DMX4 .. you can also choose 5773 with DMX3 (but you loose RAID6 since it depends on specific hardware found only in DMX4).

Hi Stefano,
-> but you loose RAID6 since it depends on specific hardware found only in DMX4 ...
??? I¿ don¿t understand you. RAID6 is available in both DMX3 and DMX4 starting 5772.

BTW.
As one of the most active person on the forum maybe you know why mainframe people are so shy 
Everything works on mainframe world ? :)

AFAIK RAID6 depends on some very specific DA boards .. that do ship in DMX4 but that did not ship with DMX3 . So code isn't enough when it comes to RAID6 .. However maybe I have bad/incorrect informations .. so let's wait for someone else to shade some light on the subject ;-)

Am I one of the most active ?? I don't know .. I am one of the most chaotic, assured!! ;-)

Mainframe people are everything but shy .. Look at Dave Yates as an example ;-)
Probably -as you noted- in mainframe world nothing goes wrong (coz nothing changes, ever) ;-)
