SRDF/A on Mainframe
We have a DMX4 in CA and another DMX4 in TX. I am an open systems guy and new to SRDF. Currently we have a Unisys mainframe and an IBM mainframe in CA that will be doing SRDF to their counter parts in TX.
Unisys does not have any "Soloutions Enabler" or any other SRDF host software. Unisys is treated like open systems in that it uses FBA devices rather than CKD devices. I had the systems programer identify 4 volumes in CA that we could use for a test. I found 4 other volumes in TX that I could use for pairs. I went to my Windows SMC machine running solutions enabler and set up Device groups and RA groups for the four pairs. I used SE to do the establish. The systems programmer copied files to the 4 volumes in CA and 60 seconds later we could see the files on the 4 volumes in TX connected to the second Unisys box. This was a very simple test but effective test.
I would like to do the same thing with our IBM Z mainframe. We are not using any of the EMC host software on the IBM (no Resource Pack or Symmetric Control Facility SCF etc). I'll have the IBM systems programmer identify sym volumes on each side that I can use. I hope I can use Solutions Enabler again on my Windows SMC box to set up all device groups and RA groups to config the pairs and do the establish etc. We would then do the same type of testing that we did on the Unisys.
Does this make sense. Can I do all setup with Solutions Enabler on my windows box. Or do I need some host component on the mainframe to make this work. Currently I plan on doing establish, suspend, resume from the Windows SE box.
Thanks, Brad

So is the Mainframe host component software even needed? Maybe I can just do everthing with SE symrdf commands.

We have both Open Systems (FBA) and IBM Mainframe (CKD) on the same array and have tested controlling all the SRDF/A from an OS host using SE. Everything works fine. The only time we run into trouble is when we get into trying to control some of the TimeFinder/Clone & Snap functions for the CKD devices from OS. This is because you can do things on the mainframe that have no direct equivalent in the OS world. But SRDF is fine.
