VMAX luns: Increasing capacity/migration not an option?

I have a 1.2 TB Raid5 meta device on a VMAXe and I simply wanted to increase the capacity from 1.2TB to 2TB.  This seems to be impossible in SMC. I know there "may" be SYMCLI commands to migrate the luns but from what I understand since it's protected via Raid5 the best option I have is to migrate to a Raid 10 or Raid 6 device and then migrate it back to the larger 2TB Raid5 device.  This doesn't make logical sense.

Since it's a meta, why can't I simply add in more same-sized meta devices?  It's absolutely easy-as-pie on a CX array in Unisphere to increase a lun's capacity without causing any issues to end-users or the server itself. I know the VMAX is an "Enterprise" class array and there are SYMCLI commands to get around this but it seems that this funcationality should be apart of the SMC console to help storage engineers and admins respond to urgent requests when a lun is reaching capacity and needs to be expanded.

I’m a little lost here.

If it’s a Striped/Striped thin BCV bound to a pool it CAN or CANNOT be expanded? What types of BCVs can be expanded. The current META is striped/striped for possible (though not used yet) SRDF configurations. You cannot configure a SRDF that is striped/concatenated according to the docs.

Correct but this device is not using SRDF.

good, because you would have to delete SRDF relationship before you could expand this device.

If you meet code and SE requirements ( as Robert provided above), you can expand your device. Use the cli, forget the SMC ( i personally can't stand it)

add dev 1E43:1E48 to meta 1DBC, protect_data=TRUE, bcv_meta_head=1C66;

you are using a BCV to protect the data on the device that is being expanded. Same thing you had to do on your DMX3 only there the BCV had to be a 2-way mirror device.

Correct but this device is not using SRDF. When I use the CLI the new “same size” devices are not even available to expand the meta. Are you saying I can do this if I use SYMCLI to do it? If so I can check Powerlink or my SYMCLI document to find the correct commands.

Ok not to act like a nOOb (because this wasn’t an issue on the DMX-3s I handled prior to the VMAX), do you have the command line or is it exactly the same as the DMX-3s?

you add regular devices that are the same size as the current members of your meta.

yes , symcli :

symconfigure -sid 123 -cmd "add dev 1E43:1E48 to meta 1DBC, protect_data=TRUE, bcv_meta_head=1C66;" prepare

if looks good

symconfigure -sid 123 -cmd "add dev 1E43:1E48 to meta 1DBC, protect_data=TRUE, bcv_meta_head=1C66;" commit

obviously use your device names.

Ok the command is a bit confusing. If the meta I am trying to expand is 04DE (in your case below, 1DBC) wouldn’t I be trying to add the new same-sized devices to the meta head and not try to add a meta within a meta?!

do you want to get it done or do you want to get it done ? . I don't use SMC so i am not going to comment ..if SMC is not doing what you think it should ..open a ticket with support.

And that’s it? Why is this available in CLI only but not SMC?

Actually I did some research on this on the forums and found that with SMC it’s nearly impossible to expand a meta (unlike Unisphere). I’m a big GUI vs CLI guy because I can visualize everything. However, I do need to get it done so if I have to go back to “old school” ways of doing things (such as SYMCLI commands) then that’s what I’ll do ☺
